More copper problems?

Thanks every one for the advise on the copper meds and the tank.

I may have a bigger issue now. I purchased tsummers equipment that was advertised in the for sale section. I took the cured life rock from his system (approx 50lbs) and added it to the LR I have curing in my tank. Now, while cleaning his equipment I noticed he used a copper coupling in his filtration setup  . I am pulling all the live rocks from tsummer out of my tank.

Question1: Are the LR from tsummers useless? If so what do I do with them?

Question 2: Have I damage the LR that I have curing?

Question 3: Is there any way the neutralize/eliminate copper?

Bump^^

One of the reason I purchased this setup was to alieviate my copper concerns. With a piece fo copper pipe sitting in the refugium I feel the answer is obvious; live rocks and the tank are contaminated with copper and are useless.

welcome to MR.....and sorry to hear about the issues your having......
if it was me.....i would go out and get a new tank....55 gallons arent that expensive nowadays......or you can look around for a used setup......
since you just started the tank.....break it down and start over.....sell your tank in craigslist or some freshwater site.....but it all depends on how much funds you got to spend.........just my thought.....good luck with everything

Here are 2 posts from RC regarding copper plumbing and the potential to release copper into the water. Essentially, you need an acidic environment to leach copper into the water. If the copper fitting in the fuge is the issue, it's been in an alkaline environment, and, as these posts indicate, there should not be any release. People do use tap water to prepare their SW, and while they may have algae outbreaks from phosphates and/or nitrates, I've never heard of copper being an issue.

I would let the rock continue to cure, get a good test kt for copper to see if there is anything present, and put a polyfilter somewhere that would generate good flow through it. If after a few weeks, your test kit shows no copper, and the polyfilter doesn't change color to blue (?) indicating copper removal, I'd just go ahead and use the tank and the rock. The final decision is up to you, but it seems a shame to dump 50 lb of good rock and a 55g tank without proof you'll have a problem.

Crushed Coral is doable but it requires a different maintenance regimen...I prefer sand like the others but CC is definitely doable, it just requires different care, ie vacuming, stirring, high flow, etc.

I think I am ready...

Purchased a copper test kit and my tank reading are shows 0 copper .

I got rid of the seaclone skimmer and upgraded to a Remora Pro. Although I am getting more skimmage it is alot noisier than the seaclone.

The lighting has been upgraded to a Current USA Orbit 1031. It is 384W PC fixture w/lunar lights http://www.current-usa.com/orbit.html. Hoping this is enough lighting for an anemone and eventually some coral.

Got rid of the HOB filter and currently using Ecosystem 2410 filtration system http://www.ecosystemaquarium.com/html/sumps_kits.html with 10lbs of miracle mud and will be adding some cheato to the refugium soon. Also using a CPR overflow with 1" PVC piping.

The substrate is 80lbs of Argonanite which give me a 3-4" sand bed.

90lbs of liverock has been curing since the first week in January and ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are now 0. The miracle mud was added to refugium 5 days ago the tank did have a mini cycle, but now things are back to 0.

As soon as I can make it down to my LFS I am picking up a serpent star, 12 red legged hermits, 12 nassaurius snails and 12 margarita snails.

So far things are looking good my only issue is noise. The tank is in the TV room and with pump and spray noise from the protein skimmer and the water flow from the tank to refugium it is too loud for the room.

I am looking to move my three clowns from the QT to the display tank sometime this weekend.

Again any opinions on my setup so far would greatly be appreciated.
