I have the option of using either a 30 long or a 55G.
The 30 is in my home office, where it is usually quiet and I would have more of an opportunity to view the tank. The 55 is directly outside my office and gets a fair amount of people (family...not just people  ) walking past it every day.
Neither one gets any natural light and the temp here in the basement is fairly stable maxing out at about 78 degrees even in this heat.
Understanding the concept that a larger tank is usually a more stable environment, which tank am I better off commiting to SW?
...and no I cannot move the 55 into my office - there are already 5 tanks in here!
One decision I've make is that I will not be using MH lighting. I will be retrofitting to PC's. Do need more info on how to do that...
..and yes Phil, I've been lurking...
Anchient Mariner - Floyd? Ahhh, the best. RU going to see Waters in Sept?
Psycho - right foot, big toe if I had to pick one. Nice to see you here!
Hi Leslie! It isn't actually a hallway, it's the main room in my basement but you have to come through it to get to my office. Oddly enough when you wrote I was sitting here thinking how I could rearrange the furniture so I could better view the tank, or if I should tear out one of my base cabinets and put the tank in here where I spend way too much time anyway.
More stuff to think about! Redecorating was not part of the original plan but I am so psyched about doing this tank that anything is a possibility now.
I've been told the first thing I need to acquire is an RO/DI unit - so I'm off to search for one!
Thanks Master!
A friend's niece may have an unused new one, so I'm waiting to hear on that one. If it doesn't work out - this will be the one I'll get.
Still working on collecting what I need to get the tank started.
Tomorrow is decision day on the tank... it won't be the 55, heard from many people how difficult it will be to aquascape. So I'm either going with a 75 or 90.
Leslie, I'm redecorating. What a perfect new Smilie for the occaision..
:splitspin
It will be better with the tank next to me as I work, correction, act like I'm working.
Changed again on the lighting - going with the MH. Will be posting a 'want to buy'.
Getting quite an education on all this! Thanks All!
Here's a tip you won't get from any of the guys If you have a significant other, lay down the tank ground rules. They will take over your tank if you let them ;-)
I'd love to Chris but I'm uh..not the tallest person around and the depth would be too much. A friend offered a 110 yesterday for nothing and I had to decline.
Plus it's going into the basement and well, I can reach the ceiling..which is not saying much:frown:
Welcome to MR Kathy. There are so many great people here. You won't want to go anywhere else. BTW.. I got my RODI from http://www.purelyh2o.com/ I love my filter. The water that comes out has a 0 TDS reading.
Thanks for the suggestion Allan but I already have my RO/DI. I have almost everything else I'm going to need. Just a few odds & ends left to pick up, timers, fans, some plumbing pieces...
I'm waiting for my skimmer that is coming from someone who is upgrading to a larger tank. I should have that this weekend, and then I'm ready to rock & roll. My expectation is the tank will be up by about the middle of next week.
