A controller. Neptune Apex and GHL are the best right now. I was very successful without one, but the use of a controller is key. It provides a nice snap shot of your tank and advanced warning on equipment failure.

I highly disagree with this statement. It is great to have but not necessary for a healthy tank.

Patience and knowledge is key imho.
