I just got the canon5dmkII and looking for the right lens for macro and portraits not in one lens ..what do you use? what is the main difference in the canon macro 100mm v.s. the 100mm L series other than the price?

Main difference between the 100mm and 100mm L lens is IS (Image Stabilization). Most Canon "L" lenses are also weather sealed. You can also use the 100mm for portraits but I use the Sigma 1.4 85mm, very sharp lens.

Yes its a great portrait lens if you have room, not ideal for tight spaced portrait shots especially on a cropped sensor which is actually 160mm. Keep in mind the 2 major factors affecting DOF is aperature and distance to the subject.


the 100mm macro lens for portraits ? wouldn't that be a tight fit with the subject how would dof work if the subject is 12ft away ..
