I have a Canon SD1300 and when I taake pictures they don't have the colors as I see them. Doesn't matter if I use a flash or not. The colors change but neither way is as I see it. What do I have to do to get the proper setting or do I need a more sophisticated camera.

That camera is good enough. Try not using the flash when shooting through glass. This will do two things. It will prevent any glare or shots getting too washed out. Also it will increase the time the shutter is open (the time where the camera is taking the picture) so if you (or your subject move it will be blurry). Try and stabilize your arm/hand on something so you don't shake while the shutter is open. Experiment with the settings (its digital, you can delete bad shots) take a shot, switch a setting, take another shot of the same thing and then you'll see the effect that setting has. Have fun! Good luck!

Use a tripod, also use the timer feature on the camera if available. Turn of all pumps and wait at least 5 minutes for everything to settle. Try to foxus on the eyes for fish or and interesting area of a coral.

Then adjust the white balance using Canon digital photo professional or Photoshop or similar program.

If your camera has a custom white balance setting take a piece of paper and take a picture of that under your lights. Then use that to set the white balance.

Take lots of pictures with different settings and once you find the right combination make sure you write it down so you can go back to it again.

The most important thing to remember is don't be discouraged with your first pictures. Its a learning experience and try to have fun.

I take my picture in the raw, so it needs to be adjusted in a program on computer. I just colors, brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and then sharpness. If you have the option to shoot in raw, it's like a digital darkroom

I believe your camera has an underwater feature, try that first. also tell me if you have a manual setting or a custom setting.

most of the suggestions made would work with a different camera but they don't apply to your camera as well as others. It was suggested that you use a tripod, this will work with stationary objects only. The time lapse between the time you press the button and the camera takes the pic with cause a slight blur. The white paper under your lights is good but using a piece of white pvc underwater will work best. This however will work best if you have custom White balance. Start with the underwater or aquarium function, and if you have a manual setting also try that feature. And as suggested, shot, shot and shot some more.
