I'm looking to buy a Nikon or Canon SLR.

I'm looking to get a nice camera body along with a lens.

I have experience with a Panasonic super-zoom camera and its manual settings and figured its time to go slr.

Looking to spend like 500 on body and around 500 on lens give or take 1200 with tax.

Considering i own a superzoom i wanted a nice all around lens..something like a 18x200 lens is what i have come up with. how does that sound for all around shooting??

what camera body would you recommend?

would used be a possibility? what is the best bang for the buck body wise? how about lens?

im going to be taking a lot of shots for my brothers clothing line. moving shots like skateboarders surfers, bikers etc... along with portraits, outdoor photos and scenery.

If I was you, I would do (please note that I'm, a Nikon guy, you need another recommendation from a Canon guy:)) a Nikon D90 with a kit 18-105mm lens or bought a nikon d90 body and Tamron 18-270mm, great walk-around lens. Practice a little bit and save money for a good macro lens then. For shooting action like skateboarders or surfers I would recommend a prime lens lens with F /1.4, that's what I am gonna buy someday:) Camera bodies are less important than lens, but from my experience, there's a big difference from when I had Nikon D40 and my current D90. The latter is just much more close to being a pro camera. I know that some may not agree with me, but if I was you, I would look in D90+walk around lens, learn it and then think about macro or wide-lens, depending what you like to photograph. Hope that helps

Head on over to one of the camera rental store in manhattan and rent the camera your interested in, and give it a try. A good camera is the one that will do what you want it to do. As for a lens, the sports you mention are fast paced sports so decide what you want to photograph in these sports and get a lens to suit, but get the fastest lens you can afford.
I did some skateboarders with a 28mm 2.8, I used it because it was about the environment the skateboarder was using, ex. a leap off a banister.
