Since Sanjay comes here frequently, I thought I'd post his latest article and perhaps he can answer questions if anyone has any.

These are awesome!

I actually utilize the fluorescence properties at work almost every day. A lot of the fluorochromes (the colors) from organisms (corals, etc) have been isolated and are now being used in the life sciences, and in my case, flow cytometry for cancer research.

One of the most famous colors is GFP, or the Green Fluorescent Protein, which was isolated from a jellyfish. Another that is also commonly used now is DsRed, which comes from Discosoma sp., or our mushrooms.

Fluorescence is fun to play with. Even more with lasers to use for excitation!

(I can't wait to set up my nano and see this live again!)

Very cool.

I was wondering if our super blue LEDs put out a spectrum that will work for things like this? If so we can just get a pair of the glasses to enjoy our tanks in a new way at night.

Yes, that would work. I have tried it with the blue LED and a the same barrier filter that I used. In fact, I think some of the Yellow filters may work as well. You may get some slightly different colors but that would be cool too.
