WTB SLR: need camera recommendations

russ, to make things even harder, take a look at some sample pics taken with both cameras:

i think the d90 pics tend to better, in terms of exposure, colors, and sharpness. let me know what you think

The D40 pictures happen to be beautiful. The D90 pix are beautiful too, but are they worth $600-$700 more than the D40? Not sure. Just more confused than ever :banghead:
