I went out and bought a nikon d40 with lens kit. I tried some close up shots but cant seem to be able to use the macro feature. Do i need to use a macro lens? Also what macro lens are you guys using? The cheaper... the better for me...... any recommendations?

Hi,

I use Nikon 60mm. You can get a Tamron 90mm or Sigma instead. Anyways, you can also take good pictures with your lens. You have to use a tripod though. Set your camera to "A" mode; then set aperture to f11. The camera will set a shutter speed automatically. Since the shutter speed will be slow, use a timer feature to take a picture...

HTH,

Yes you do need a Macro lens and a tripod, The timer on the camera is not essential but helps and I would buy the Sigma 105mm macro lens it is about $400. I have a Nikon 105mm vr lens but it costs $750 Tamron does not have the same following as sigma. So if finances allow the nikon is the best you cn get and the sigma is the budget lens. Do not get a 50mm lens unles you have a 40 gallon tank or smaller. If you do have a 40 gallon or lower than you can purchase a 50mm, but when I first joined manhattan I saw your circular tank which in my opinion is nowhere near a 100 gallon.
Just my opinion Good luck with your final decision.

You should change your post to " TO ALL NIKON USER" :)... I have a canon and I use a 100mm/ f2.8 when I take macro shots.. I like to take top down shots so I barely use my Tripod, But just like Wit said Tripod will help you get better shots...and use low ISO :)
