Anyone use it?

If so, do you like it?

Does it replace the need for Photoshop, or are both needed (I already have CS2)?

I am thinking about getting because I want to shot some photos in RAW and I think that is the only software that reads it, right?

Here's the RAW program:

Digital camera raw file support
The camera raw functionality in Adobe® Photoshop® software provides fast and easy access within Photoshop to the "raw" image formats produced by many leading professional and midrange digital cameras. By working with these "digital negatives," you can achieve the results you want with greater artistic control and flexibility while still maintaining the original "raw" files.

The Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in became the latest must-have tool for professional photographers when it was released in February 2003. This powerful plug-in has been updated to support more cameras and include more features, and is available as part of Adobe Photoshop CS3. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.0 is now also available and is built upon the same powerful raw processing technology that is available in the camera raw plug-in.

The Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in (2.3 or higher) now also supports raw files in the DNG format. Find out more about the benefits of the Digital Negative, a publicly documented raw file format recently announced by Adobe.

I took a couple or RAW pictures and CS2 wouldn't open them. Then I recalled reading that Nikon has a different kind of RAW formatt called NEF. So I assumed that CS2 wasn't supposed to open it.

I just opened CS2 and Nikon .NEF files are listed in the drop down box in the "open" window. So, it supposed to open them.

I need to contact customer support to figure out why it wouldn't open mine.

I found a plug in at the Adobe site that enabled me to open .NEF files in CS2. :D

Anywho, does anyone out there have Capture NX and have anything to say about it?

I am glad I don't have to buy it just to open RAW files.

Yeah, I've been opening my NEF files in pshop, its just a hassle. The Nikon software is actually ideal for opening and resaving them out of RAW from what I recall reading on some forums... tho I don't see a difference while playing with it at home.

Capture works very well but CS2 RAW (with plug in for NEF) is much easier to use. It also provides excellent conversion quality. Capture has more tweakable settings though.

I shoot JPEG for day to day shots, but converted RAW definitely has more detail.

I originally used the nikon program for my NEF files, but then I used the PS and it worked easier. I deleted the nikon program and haven't used it since I got PS.

I THINK I will end up getting Photoshop Elements. It has a RAW plug-in and seems to be a way where I can slowly learn the PS environment. I'm open to other options though, especially if you like NX Louey.

Elements is probably a good start. I don't know anything about their RAW plug-in though.

I won't be trying NX anytime soon. I have my hands full just learning my new camera, lenses, CS2 and Picture Project.

I'm also getting ready to take an on-line course in DreamWeaver. So my learning plate is slap full.

Eeesh, $600 for CS2? Yeah I better start with Elements ;). I'm still trying to learn my new D70s. Bringing it to Alaska for our honeymoon...still need to pick up a 70-300VR lens for any wildlife shots. This thing is costing me way too much money, especially while working in the auto industry ;).

Do you have any college student friends?

You can get all of the adobe products for less than half price at a college book store. It's the education version, but the only difference is you agree only install it on one computer, or one desktop and one laptop. All the bells and whistles are there.

The whole adobe Creative Suite can be bought for $400. I thinks CS2 alone is around $180.

Just a thought.

I'll have to look into it. Have you tried PE? Does PS2 have that much more that I would use over that? Thanks.

Hey Louey,

What are you doing for post processing? I'm trying to learn what should be done to most images and what should be selectively done. I have my D70s setup to shoot in JPG+RAW (RAW was suggested to me by someone else for my Alaska trip). I like RAW because I can play with the exposure settings basically in case I screwed up. Have you found any good tutorials or info on what should be done in most cases? Thanks.

I really haven't done much in RAW yet. I did take one picture in RAW and JPEG just so I could open the RAW file and see how the adjustments work. I haven't had much time to mess with it.

I did take an on-line class in CS2 though. It was excellent! See this link. I see that they also offer a course in Elements as well.
