It depends hugely on the quality of the image preserved and the compression method employed. I would daresay most images (as jpg's) will fall under 250kb as a 640x image. It is a good cutoff size if you want to post web pictures.
If you are doing it to shrink pictures for web use, I would recommend setting pixel sizes though as it preserves more of the image and meddles less with quality.
