It may be different in this application but when I used to run the pool business we only changed the sand every ten years. They actually worked the best after about two years. Althought you are running 24/7 and pools are usually 8/7. Basically you check the pressure guage when backwashing doesn't bring it back to the working pressure its time to change the sand. Hope this helps.
If you were closer I would help with the plumbing :) good excuse...;)

Thanks Walter :) What exactly is the proper working pressure for my model filter? :) It didn't cross my mind to double check that. I just followed the recommended water flow rate.
