20 Under 20 Fellowship

I am not sure whether you like the style of Peter Thiel or agree on his stakes on these young fellows with $100,000 each. However, his insghts in Paypal and Facebook are definitely no simple luck.

I do agreed with his believe that innovation has stagnated in the U.S. and that radical solutions are needed to push civilization forward.

However, his choices and fellowship seems quite radical in itself. I was offered to quit college, from a professor in my own college(LOL), with a similar $40,000 annually (up front) plus bonus, 10 college grads and a Ph.d as assistants) to start a software divison back in days. Back then programmers graduated with $24K-28K annual salary. But still I felt it's too radical not to finish college and turned it down. Newer generation seems to have changed.

I can say that a college degree isn't necessary for many of your white collar jobs. The only reason why you need to get it so your resume isn't trashed, even experience doesn't make you a better candidate for these types of jobs. But in this market, already having a job now matters more.

Again, if you're one to succeed then no matter what your path is you'll find a way. These kids he picked aren't your typical kids who go to school and choose the typical 4 yr degree.

Even though I think going college is not just for a resume but I have to agree to you in some extent.

At a job interview and orientation, human sources delegation of Citi Bank came to my school and said to the candidates, "You don't need to worry about what program languages or courses in finance you learned, all we need to see is that you guys are trainable." After you are hired, we will re-train you to our system. In other words, they were not hiring smart people :lol_large but stable trainable people. :fishhit: They want to see that the candidates can take the abuse of the professors, handling of the rediculous lab reports that took 16 hours a week to finish for just 1 credit, the rigid school system of GPA and so forth. However, to show that one can take the abuse, GPA is a reflection of such. LOL
