It wouldn't be cost effective if the companies had to have someone go in and flash each ECU everytime they had to swap the rims on a car.
not a mechanic, but...when I had the rear end gears changed in my Prowler, they also changed a Speed Sensor Module to correct the speedometer ... which took less than 2 minutes.

Yes, because the rear gear ratio has a greater effect on the speed of the rear wheels than a rim package. That's why V6 mustangs come with 3.75 gears and the 8s come with 3.25 stock to make up for the difference in power. The sensor isn't a big deal but gear swaps aren't nearly as common as wheels. I think the upgraded gears are optional in the mustangs now but they make a big difference when you mash the gas.

wow thanks for all the info. I thought it was a simple decision, but boy was i wrong. :) I've look around and the cost for the new rims and wheels cost too much for a commuter car. I think i'll just replace the wheels at this point, and consider custom rims on my next new car. Thanks all.
