I have a 02 yamaha yzf600r. Not the r6, the thunder cat. I am thinking about getting a d&d exhaust. After watching many youtube videos, I like the sound and price the best on the d&d...so I just put a bid on one on eBay. Now, my question is...is removing the baffle from my stock exhaust going to make the bike stupid loud and 100% unsafe? Many people I know have removed the baffle from their exhausts. Then again, many people say "ohh it's so bad for the bike" and this and that. I even see ALOT of people taking brand new bikes and taking the baffle out of the stock exhaust. So, I'm thinking about just for fun, taking my stock exhaust and removing the baffle. My bike is one of the quietest bikes out their stock. You really cannot hear your self revving it on a highway. I can't hear myself accelerate. If I remove the baffle, is it going to sound as loud as when the bike is started with no exhaust? Just for fun I did that once and it was HORRiBLY loud. I don't want that. I want a nice sound, but not like a zero exhaust sound. Remember, I'll be getting a d&d exhaust soon and most likely be using that, but for fun, is it really that big of a deal removing it and riding with no baffle?

Also, anyone with experience with doing this? I was told just a new hole saw bit that exact size of baffle, some cutting oil, and a long extension. Then after words, lost of brake clean, let it dry out, air gun it real good with a compresser, then a long magnet to make sure no metal shaving are left behind... Is this correct? Or is there a better way?

Thanks guys...

If you remove the baffle you will loose power i did that to my bike when i was riding just wait for the d&d thay sound sweet love that sound. What you could do is just drill some holes in the muffle it self that will make it loader i did that with my friends ZX10 and it wasnt that load good enuff for the cars to hear you coming.

See if you can get a mod for the exhaust so you don't lose power but get the loud exhaust pipe sound. Loud pipes save lives.

Few people I spoke with actually felt like they had a slight more low end pull. If performance is all the problem, I can care less. I'm not one of those crazy people speeding around, flying, ect. I like to just ride around, have fun, and enjoy it. I don't fly around. I'm not giving it my all when it comes to riding. I know way to many people who got hurt on a bike, I ride to have fun, not for the thrill. But, I don't like having a bike sound like a vacuum. No one can hear me...

Removing the baffled on a bike is like removing the cats in a car exhaust. You will lose power because you won't have any back-pressure

Sent from my ADR6400L using Reefs

+ 1 your bike needs back pressure unless. Do not take your baffles out if you are worried about top performance and occasional backfire and being obnoxiously loud. I have a Harley with straight pipes(no baffles) and it definitely has less power(not feels like but actually put on a dyno) and my gas mileage went down tremendously as well. I didn't care because it sounds crazy and that's what I wanted. I also have a track turbo bike and if you need any solid no nonsense advise pm me. I have been riding for 23 years and doing super street drag racing for 15.

There are a couple of companies out there that have removable baffles in the form of discs that let you tune the exhAust/bikes performance. In addition it will progressively get louder the more you take out and vise versatile as put back in. The nice part is that you add or subtract as many as you like for your ears...more or less...:)

This is also used in car racing. They are called muffler traps. Used to just limit down noise and increase backpressure.
