Save yourself a lot of money and check the flashing that is at the point on the chimney where it meets your roof line. The flashing (either copper or aluminum) is a bent piece of metal that sits flat on the roof shingles and bends up and rests against the chimney brick.
If your chimney/roof is missing any of the flashing it needs to be replaced. Even if you can't personally do the installation of the flashing, you should be able to save some money by directing the roofer (person to do the install) to the problem area. This at least gives the appearance that you know what you're talking about
Very common this time of the year with flashing because of the ice build up and so on. the people next door to me just had the same problem the roofer came with a couple nails a tube of some smelly ass nasty black roof tar and as of this afternoon with crazy rain she had no problem at all. good advice Russy
