OT email I received

OK I received an email from a magazine I subscribe to (Cook's Illustrated) that basically said my personal information as well as other subsribers and possibly credit card information could have been potentially compromised.

Glad I subscribe to Citi credit monitoring service. I should place a Fraud Alert on my credit report just as a precautionary measure.

I would go to their website and send them the email - most likely this is a CC phising expedition.

The email I received looked legitimate from the publisher. The notice of the security breach was on their website as follows:

damn, that sucks. hopefully it was just an accident and not a real security breach but that is pretty scary. CI is a great magazine, btw, but I am glad I pay for it by check the old-fashioned way.

Yeah I hope so. I just checked my credit reports last night but will most likely need to continue to do so. Not sure if it makes sense to place a fraud alert on my credit report at this time since I have citi credit monitoring service. They offer fraud assistance so I'm going to take them up on it.

I used to pay for the magazine and the website by check but I recently added the web subscription and used my amex.

wow. scary stuff. it's always a good idea to check your credit report every 3-6 months regardless.

I get scam emails like that all the time- especially from 'e-bay'. the scammers make it look really professional- and if you click on the link that they give it routes you to a fake site made to look like e-bay. then you enter in your info and they steal it! the site will actually have links on it that link to legit ebay pages!

Never believe an email sent to you- call the company direct or type in their actual homepage in your browser (never click on the link in the email- no legit company would ever do that). E-bay has a good section on fraud emails that you can read...

btw - cooks illustrated is the best magazine, i've made a ton of receipes from them- I love how scientific they are- Like Alton Brown on Good Eats!

Yeah I have to concur on CI. Great magazine and very scientific as you pointed out. What I like about the magazine is they explain the process and take you through a number of trials they have gone through to perfect a recipe. Once you follow their directions without deviation you usually end up with a great tasting dish.

Setting up a fraud alert with the three major credit reporting agencies is a good idea anyway. If you or your wife were to open a new account they wouldn't open it until they can verify with you that it is legit. That's all the inconvenience you have to deal with.

I had $1700 worth of 1st class airline tickets fraudulently charged to my CC about 5 years ago. I was responsible for none of it but I set up fraud alert anyway. It has averted any additional fraud so far.

I'd put it on your accounts if I were you.
