Im an electrical engineer and i got my BS from suny farmingdale. Its not a bad school but if you can go to stony brook i would suggest it over suny farmingdale. Hofstra also has engineering but i dont think its very good. A few other schools to consider are polytech and NYIT. Polytech is a very good school but its in brooklyn. You should figure out what type of engineering you want to pursue as they are all very different.

This is very true. I am interested in Engineering Disciplines that are on opposite ends of the spectrum as well.. :lol2: Chemical to Industrial .. a few in between. I need to figure this out.

Also just from experience, you might want to consider choosing a discipline where you plan on living. If you choose chemical or industrial, you will have a hard time finding a job in the tri-state area since there isn't much technology or industry here in New York. There a few a pharmuectical companies in New Jersey. I would say say you would have the best possibilities of landing a job in electrical engineering or mechanical engineering if you stay around here. Keep in mind you should do what you're interested in though. Just something to think about. Chemical does have alot in common with Mechanical so maybe it is in option for you.

Chem E can get you into the Pharm industry. There are quite a few companies in NJ/NY/PA.

I work in Pharma/Biotech and lived in Hoboken for 7 years. I transferred almost 2 years ago (by choice) but we still have opportunities in NJ/PA as well as New England, West Coast, and Southeast.

We were not affected by the recession. It's a very stable industry. People will always need medicine.

I know a few chem e people from Georgia tech and most of the really money making jobs I'm told are in California and Texas. I'm not a chem E so I'm just going by what people have told me. I still think there are way more job opportunities in EE and ME around here.

we employ all types of engineers.

Just saying Pharma is a great industry. They are hiring when others are laying off..And chem E seems to have a competitive edge over other types of engineers during the interview process. So if you seek a job in my industry, I'd recommend chem.

The hot areas are Boston/New England, NJ/PA, California, and here in the Raleigh/Durham area. And we have a few jobs scattered in other parts of the country.

There are not lot of Engineering Jobs in the city last time I checked. But NJ has a ton of Pharma/Biotech companies.

And you have Wyeth in Pearl River, NY.

I graduated from farmingdale. I did got an associates in ee and bs in manufacturing. I also took all their mechanical classes.

Don't get me wrong, farmingdale not only prepared me for a career, I found my job at their job fair before I even graduated. I've worked at the same place for 7 years and hope to retire one day from this job.

With that said, farmingdale is an engineering technologies school. Not a true engineering school like stony brook. If you are clever, farmingdale will be a breeze. You can have time to goto school and still have a social life.

It depends what you are going for. The EET bachelors is very close to an EE bachelors in most other schools. Its deff no breeze I can tell you that. The only real difference is that the don't require a cal 3 course. But the engineering classes themselves are pretty much the same at most EE programs. I'm getting my masters in EE at manhattan college now and they accepted my into their program with no issues. I have no trouble with any of their graduate courses covering material I haven't covered in undergrade. It really depends on the individual. I didn't really like farmingdale at all so I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone. I would tell anyone serious about engineering to go to Stony brook or Polytech if you can afford it. And I agree with the Engineering jobs in NYC and in long island. Most of the jobs are ether for electronics companies, defense contractors, or consulting firms. I work for a consulting engineering firm in Manhattan designing power distribution systems for buildings. There are tons of these types of firms throughout the NYC area and is why I said mechanical and electrical engineers have the best bet at finding jobs locally.
