hooking up suuround sound

i was given a surround sound ststem by a neighbor who is moving and i have no idea how to hook it up.right now my cable box is hooked up with a hdmi cable and the surround sound does not have that input.how can i hook it up yo tv without that cable.also do the cables go out through receiver or in to receiver.so confused.it does have a port for red blue green which i have 2 sections of cables if i have to use that

Take a pic of the back of the surround sound and the cable box then i can help you

Pretty sure u need a toslink or hdmi from ur tv to receiver for sound

nope

about 99.9% positive. thats how the audio gets from the box to the surround sound. I'm assuming you have the speakers also.

Optical out from the cable box to the optical in on the reciever . This is for sound true surround sound and the video can stay the same. This is how you would put it if you want the sound from the cable tv to always play throw the surround sound reciever. This is how i have my tv setup.

yah its does say dvd on it so thats easy.

i dont think the optic on the cable box is the same as the receiver.i called radio shak and the only cables they have are the same on both sides as the chord
