Nice NYT article on upscale home aquariums

Reminds me of an incredible apt in TriBeCa I was in that had a river, waterfall, and an awesome tank in the living room. I'll try and find some pics of the setup if anyone is interested.

I found it very disturbing. These people have no genuine interest in the hobby...they hire people to do every last thing for them...they don't even know the names of their fish. Some of these tanks sound so phony- the 14' tank with different colored lights and glass balls on the bottom. No surprise that he is equally proud of his tanning bed. At least now when I look at my coralline encrusted tank....remind myself that I have to scrape off the algae again, so I can see my beat up looking but happy tang and maroon clown chasing each other over my corals and crocea's, I can feel some pride that this is my tank, that I set up, maintain (or forget to maintain) myself...a part of my household for over a decade...not just a fancy decoration for people to ooh and ahh over.

I personally agree with you e.muehlbauer, but I think some people view it as hiring a landscaper to take care of their garden. They like the look of a great garden but don't want to take care of it themselves. I think its the difference between enthusiasts vs rich people buying a fancy toy. Enthusiasts will want to build their own car, or at least make modifications and do any other major work while people buying a fancy sports car will just take it to the shop.

This is exactly the point of the article - it's an essential part of the design, both structurally and interior wise for them to have this as part of their homes.

Plants don't get near as much attention as the living fish (pun intended), but garden animals die off all the time and they pay loads to have them managed and scaped.

Not that I agree with it, all of our installations have educated owners (proud to say).

Kinda hard not to generalize but I would hope that Joe's client is the outlier and most do care for their livestock. On a side note, lately I find the NYT has been relying on controversy (especially in their op-ed section) to try and save their business. More and more stories seem to evoke resentment. Totally IMHO.

Also, does anyone think that first one is small for 700 gallons? Must be a big hidden sump somewhere...

These tanks are fun! I can tell you that these tanks and their resident animals are well taken care of, at least the ones I designed. Everyone should be able to enjoy home aquariums. It was a great article. Thanks NY Times.
