Buying new ATT phone without ending contract?

My phones getting pretty old and I still have about 8 months on the contract, so I was wondering if I could buy a used ATT phone and just put my SIM card in the phone and use my existing contract? I would really like to do this with an Iphone but I heard the SIM cards are different and it won't work... So can I do this?

iphones and blackberrys(PDA) phones need certain plans, other non media phones do not and you wont have a problem updating to a new phone that fits your current contract.

You can just add a phone without renewing your contract, even with iphones and BB's. You should just have pay your monthly, plus whatever extras for internet service and the other iphone extras for the iphone to work. If a sales person is telling you otherwise punch him in the face because he's trying to screw you.

And you can pop out the iphone sim and add another. Its on the top near the shut off button.

Your sim card that your adding into the iphone needs to be 3g or something for the iphone to work properly. The iphone sim card works in other phones though. Im pretty sure you can go to apple and they can add a new iphone compatible sim card into your phone and transfer your service into it though. I could be wrong.
