Hi guys. Just yesterday, I adopted an 10 week old lab hound mix and I need some advice. It would be SINCERELY APPRECIATED.

Please read this in full.

Last night the puppy woke me up 10 times last night, from 1am to 6am relieving itself 5 times in the crate, and 3 of them were shits.
The smell woke me up and each time cleaned it up.

I have been home EVERY SECOND with the puppy. I have read and done my research. EACH TIME it sniffs around and decides to take a wee on the rug I CATCH IT RIGHT IN THE MOMENT, YANK it by the scruff and rush it downstairs and out the door. It sits there looking at me like wats going on.

So today I went and took a bounty towel to soak up the urine on my rug and place it outside as to tell the puppy this is where it should go.
30 minutes standing outside and nothing.

It will not stop taking a wee on the rug. I am crate training the dog.
It will not relieve itself outside.

i greatly appreciate anybody and everybodies help..

Aaron

well first off get yourself some wee wee pads.seconly you need not to be angry with him it wont learn that way.you neeed to be patient and wait till he goes outside.eventually he willl then you give him a treat and a pat on his head with peaise.do not let him run through out the house.i know he is cute and you want to play but this stage of his is not time to give him that freedom.keep him in his pen.you will have plenty of time for playing when he is older.this is his learning stage.

Very strongly recommend crate training. You will help him to have a safe place. And you will be working with his instincts to not wet where he sleeps.

This is a great way also to strengthen his bladder muscles a little at a time. Without the crate- the urge comes- then he pees and nothing is stopping him.

Likely elimination times

  • First thing in the morning
  • After taking a nap
  • After eating a meal
  • 8 to 10 week old- will want to do every 2 hours or so- max.
  • Last thing before bed
If you go outside and he doesn't do his business but you know that he is full and should. Put him back in the crate with a chew toy and try again in about 30 minutes. If not, you will have an accident on the carpet.

DO NOT leave him in the crate for too long of a period of time. If he soils his bedding then you have set yourself back a few days... Make sure to clean it up quickly- use the vinegar formula and get it smelling like home again- not a bathroom.

Here are some general times that you should leave your puppy in the crate without a potty break.
Like people- puppies are unique so yours may go less or more... just a rule of thumb.

  • 8 to 10 weeks 1 hours to 2 hours max.
  • 11 to 12 weeks 2 hours to 2 1/2 hours max.
  • 13 to 16 weeks 3 hours max.
  • 17 to 20 weeks 4 hours max.
Now keep in mind- 3 out of my 4 personal dogs beat these times by hours- but- remember we don't want to set the puppy up for failure.

If you are needing to leave a new puppy for longer than these guidelines- you may chose to do the papertraining until you return.

One idea is to use the kitchen floor- easy to clean up- lay paper down and put up confinement baby gates.

Always go with your puppy outside- especially in the beginning for two reasons.
1) you want to make sure he went.
2) you want to praise him and give the verbal command at the same time

Always go to the same area-when cleaning up the mess- leave a little every time. Make sure to do this routine for several weeks- the praise when he pottys- THEN you can slack off and let him go alone.

If he starts to go inside- make a sound and pick him up- take him outside and praise him when he goes. IF he has already done the deed- DO NOT punish him- He will not associate the poop for the punishment. You have to catch him doing the deed.

After two to three weeks without an accident, you can add another room that he is unsupervised. If an accident happens, take the room back...

Begin crate training right away- aka- first day home with puppy

You can use small treats to get him comfortable going into the crate.

When he is in there- close door for a few minutes... Continue this the first day and each time- extend the time he is in there...

He is learning that you will let him out- KEEP in mind all the rules so far about not giving in when he is barking or whining. If you let him out then, he is trained to whine to get out.

HAVE FUN- Yes, it's a little hard work the first few days but then you have a best friend for life.

I'm no expert but i have 2 dogs, 2 by my fathers, and 1 at my girls house, i have had part in raising them all. One thing i have read and noticed is that puppies can not hold there urine until a couple of months old, This dog is going to pee and **** in your house for the next few months. Obviously bringing him out every hour if your around can keep this too a minimum. Keep him off the carpet so it doesn't trap his scent. [buy some linolium if you have too...its what i have done]

My girlfriend has a 9 month old lab that i have been with everyday and helped raise since 8 weeks old. Alot of puppies wont eat unless you hand feed them.. Our dog did it for a few weeks... she was blessed with an amazing dog and he only went to the bathroom less that 10 times in the house. I know it sounds crazy but its true unless she has covered up some slip ups..anyways everything he is doing is normal. Just remember the dog is in a new surrounding, with new people.

My advice be persistant and use 1-2 word commands and keep up with taking him outside and you will be good. Persistance is key,

What you put into it will reflect on what kind of dog you'll have.

[in some cases the dogs are like humans and self teach themselves. Some not. My girls dog is a rare case and didnt have to teach him anything. ITS RARE THOUGH]

I have been home EVERY SECOND with the puppy.

If you're going to be home 24/7 for the rest of the dog's life that's cool. If not, you could be setting yourself up for separation anxiety once you finally leave her alone.

As to feeding from your fingers.. Simply don't feed from your fingers, she'll be hungry soon enough.
