You'll have better luck finding an organization yourself. All of the places that advertise their services will definitely sell the car. From my understanding, there is one large parent company that has different branches, each with different names, that looks for people to donate their cars. They are definitely for-profit.

I work for a non-profit that accepts car donations. However, all these vehicles go to auction for resale, with the profit being funneled back into the program.
I think you will find that is how 99.9% of these companies work. There are just so many "insurance/ law suit" liabilities about passing on a used vehicle to an end user. Where a car can be sold as-is without encountering these headaches.
If you are truley charity consious please beware.... Not all these charities are not-for-profit. A lot of these car donation programs only license a charity's name and give the charity an annual fee.
If you want PM me and I'll let you know who I work for, we would love the donation.

Just cut through the red tape.

Sell the car and give the money to charity. Or better yet, sell the car, invest the money and then you'll have even more money to give to the charity. OR sell the car, take that money to Atlantic City and parlay it into some real cash, then give half of it to charity.

I could have sworn I posted this yesterday.

I just assisted a friend in donating his car. He contacted a local high school and donated the car to be used in their automotive repair classes. I think that will accomplish your tax objectives.

Or donate it to your local volunteer fire department, they will use it to train on and practice saving lives and give you a write off as well.

Here's a little warning story about donating your car: my parents did and in retrospect wish they'd just smashed it into little bits. So they donate it to some charity or other in Brooklyn. This was 4.5 years ago, in May. In November of that same year they receive a notice from a court in Philadelphia telling them that their car has been illegally parked since July and they must come to court for a hearing. The make of the car described in the notice was that car, but the license plates weren't theirs. Those were returned to DMV. My parents sent a note back saying the car was not theirs. Over the next 4.5 years they kept getting occasional notes from some car pound telling them to come and pick up their car and pay their parking ticket fees. This past summer they get a new notice from the court stating that they must again come to a hearing about their car. This time my parents wrote to DMV in Philadelphia with the car info provided by the court to confirm who the owner of the vehicle is. Philadelphia DMV replies with the name and address of some woman from Connecticut. Why the court officials and the car pound didn't get this info themselves - who the hell knows. The point is, for 4.5 years my parents have in some weird legal limbo with the city of Philadelphia because the courts there insist my parents started illegally parking their car there 2 months after donating it to a charity. If you do donate, make sure you keep all paperwork in case some schmock who buys it at auction leaves his heroin stash in the trunk before parking it illegally and they come after you owning heroin.

Honestly, that can happen not matter what you do with the car.

Car was given to a NPO in North Carolina. If someone wants to maximaze their charitable deduction they should donate to them. Their name is Good Samaritan Cars of NC. Please close the thread.
