can anyone explains to me why did Torre use Joba in the 7th when they have 5 run lead. now he had 38 pitches, probably can't use him as effective tomorrow

he pitch well enough before the wild pitches, the 8th is in buggy situation
now he can't pitch 2 tomorrow. torre does not need to bring in joba in the 7th when they have 5 RUN lead, could have use any somebody else or wait until some one on base in 7th then bring him in. just like the other day, everybody knows that the bugs are bothering him why can't torre take him out with runner on 3rd.

Tomorrow is Mussina with Wang as back up - he shouldn't need jaba based on available rotation - when he'll need him is game 5. Also, he did need to get him back on the mound after a bad day - nothing worse for the head than sitting around hoping you'll do better next time and not getting a next time.

If they would have brought in Veras, Farnsworth, Vizcaino, Ohlendorf, or whoever, and they blew the save, everyone would second guess his move. It was a do or die situation. They won. You can't play for tomorrow when tomorrow never comes if you lose today.

FYI, tomorrow is going to be Wang with Moose as backup the way Phil Hughs was backup tonight.

Frankly, and not to hijack the thread - i am VERY angry at Steinbrenner. what a schmuck! to PUBLICLY threaten Torre the way that he did not only messes with Torre, but REALLY messes with the psyche of the players - can you imagine the stress they were under today - had they lost the game, regardless of Torre's management, he'd (possibly?) be canned and they could conceivably be to blame.
Frankly, as much as I love the Yankees, and for some reason, I seem to care about them (I am surprised only b/c I did not grow up here and have no reason to love them other than that my friends and even daughters seem to love them....), the thing is that you do not publicly threaten people. it is not decent.
If I were Torre, I'd finish the series (win, of course) and quit with a quiet and dignified flourish. Say I'm better than the guy who employs me - I don't have to take this.

You must be new to Steinbrenner's way? :scratch: He's been threatening managers since he bought the team. Also, managers get fired all the time due to lack of production from their players.

My theory is that Steinbrenner has softened (A LOT) over the years. I think this was a tactical maneuver to redirect the press to Torre instead of the lack of production by the players. Before yesterdays game, the reporters weren't even discussing the non existent offense or the lack of quality pitching, all they wanted to talk about was the possibility of yesterday being Torre's last game as a Yankee. It apparently worked for at least one game.
I think the ploy was brilliant and I applaud Steinbrenner........and Torre for going along with it. Who knows, I might have to eat my words, but it was at least genius for a day.

i'm with Russ, I think it was a good move to bring in Joba yesterday. When facing elimination, you don't take any chances.
I also agree it was a good move on Steinbrenner's public statements...Whether it was an attempt to take pressure off players, or an attempt to light the fire under their butts, it worked.

i have no problem bringing in joba but just think he should only pitch 1 instead of 2 since they have 5 run lead. can string together 7th 2-3 other guys

Easy to say after they won the game. However, there is zero confidence in the bullpen. Who would you propose to bring in, even with a 5 run lead? I can't think of anyone! Vizcaino? HA Veras? HA Farnsworth? Double HA
Great job by Torre and the rest of the team. No second guessing on my part.

Just another steinbrener trick to motivate the team, nothing new. Maybe that takes the focus away from arod and others.
And let's face it, Joba has been less than stellar. Even yesterday he almost didn't make it out the inning. If that ball would have left the park, he would have been in the showers.
People seem to forget that the regular season and the playoffs are totally different animals. Some players thrive on the big stage, others falter.
The yanks are getting a gift from the indians. They can easily close out the series by pitching sebastian today and carmona on game 5 if need be. So take things with a grain of salt. Let's see if they can take advantage of it.
Either way, i see cleaveland winning in the end.

One thing that seems to be missed in this thread - pulling Hughies after 3 1/3. He is a starter and now if Wang can't get though 6, you can bring Hughes back to make a solid bridge to the bullpen, who hopefully can close it out.
There's no way Torre will bring Hugh tonight. If Yankees is going to games 5, maybe he is available, but not tonight.
