Anti-virus programs

I have Trend Micro which turned out to be a piece of junk.Something got by and messed up all my programs except for the internet.Painfully slow.Any brands I should consider?I hate re-installing Xp over again.Need to get rid of that nasty virus.

AVG,I believe asked me to uninstall my spyware doctor and my antivirus.Can't do that.I paid for them.

^^^ what he said--just make sure u disable all those annoying pop ups for the firewall part of the program(which windows and ur router will take care of anyway)

Ugh Norton is horrible! It causes more problems than it fixes IME.

AVG asked you to uninstall those programs and rightfully so. I was fixing a laptop for a family member a few days ago and it had 3 firewall programs (never mind that it is located behind a hardware firewall 100% of the time), 4 anti-virus programs and 4 anti-spyware programs.

FWIW, the fact that all of these programs were installed WAS the problem. Most of these don't get along with each other and some of the API calls that they make are seen as malicious by some of the other programs. They all end up disabling or corrupting each other or worse F'ing up your windows registry.

If you use any type of router you don't need a firewall in fact most people don't need a firewall without a router as your ISP disables communication on ports that would cause you (and them) problems. An anti-virus is good to have I like AVG. It is far lower on system resources than Norton and it won't install 15 ancillary programs. I also like CCleaner, it's just good to have and use for removing evil programs. I use Windows Defender. I find spybot and some of the others to find tons of false positives and false "finds" in general. Many of the supposed hits are nothing more than cookies which really aren't so bad is it would make them seem.

PC world has Kapersky as #1 on their list.Norton came in second I think.AVG seemed to correct some problems.Found a nasty Trojan horse.

3 programs you should have on your system, AVG/Avast for virus protection, Spybot Search and Destroy for Spyware, and Zonealarm Free for your basic firewall. All free and not memory hogs like the others.

i totally agree with emps. i run those 3 as well as ad-ware se, SUPERantiSpyware, and pc clean and ccleaner, all for years all free, and all work great and dont cause interferance with other programs and also winpatrol, just my opinion, i play games on here also so speed and effeciancy are important :Yikes:
