I work repairing computers and the office depot deal is great. Toshiba has ok Customer Service, but anything is better than Dell IMO they s*ck. Pc richard is also having a sale on an HP with an AMD X2 here. Hp has been making good since they merged with compaq and have passed Dell in sales satisfaction lately and I have yet to hear any complaints about them from my customers. Same goes with Toshiba. I've gotten plenty of negatives about dell craftmanship and customer service and negatives about sony craftmanship Cs is ok. Like Chief, I prefer Amd over Intel and the X2 is a great chipset. Good luck whatever you choose.

In my opinion, Sony have beautiful crisp bright screens. But that's the only good thing I can say about them. Chief is right, you are just paying for the name. How long do you plan on keeping the notebook for? If you keep the notebook past the warranty period, replacement parts are much more expensive compared to other manufacturers. Many times hundreds more for a replacement systemboard or lcd screen. Also, you simply can't get the specs you should (for the money that you pay for a Sony).

I suggest that you consider the following when searching for a notebook:

1. Will you use mostly as desktop or do you travel daily with it? Battery life is important if you travel a lot. Weight is another important factor here.
2. screen size?
3. Is she going use it for gaming, 3d-modeling, or video editing. To be productive in these areas, you need a large capacity hardrive, lots of ram, discreet GPU, and fast CPU.

If she needs to lug it around all day, then you would probably want the notebook to be light and portable. Also, units with smaller screens will have a longer battery life.

If your daughter is only using the notebook for mostly for internet and word processing, then Dell has the best deals. You can get really good specs for a great price. I have a XPS M1210. I have no complaints so far. I've had it for about 6 months. All my games run at full speed.

Lastley, the OS: I currently have Windows Vista Home.It looks good, but it's buggy. There are compatibility issues with some applications. I also feel that it is sluggish compared to Windows XP.

Damn, you guys are great. Thanks so much for the low down.

My daughter is only looking to play music, word processing, internet and MAYBE a dvd movie. I say maybe, because I told her the laptops we're looking at will most likely not perform the way she would like them to while playing a dvd.

Her only 'travel' is to classes. Most likely won't even be carrying it around much. Just the space savings is enough for her.

Thanks again everyone. Your input is highly valued.

Unfortunately I got my lap top towards the end of Junior year but I went with the Hp the look and size(weight) is not that bad. And for what the use is really going to be which is to surf the internet, writting papers, download music and get fined for it. I could not have gone wrong.

Yeah you guys are right the geek squad is definitly the sad squad...

Russ,

Dell :bunnies: sucks!!!!! We have a PC and it sucks. Customer service sucks too. I got my notebook back in January from Circuit City for half the price it was supposed to cost. I think it ended up being about $600 bucks. The notebook is an HP Pavilion dv6000 series. As you know I am a student on a budget too. I have tons of music, papers, and movies on this baby and it is still lightening fast. It looks great, runs great, costs less, and HP is a quality company. Customer service is in India just like every other company, but don't expect to use them much. This is my second HP notebook and I have been satisfied with both 100%. The only reason I got a new one was because I smashed the old one by accident.

Oh yeah, the first notebook I had did need the mother board replaced at one point. HP had it picked up the next day from my house and had it back to me in less than a week free of charge.
