I am planning to buy a new Notebook and I was considering this one
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...ategoryId=pcmcat103700050021&id=1181347549982

I hear a lot of guys talking about the Mac's. Maybe get a seystem from Dell?

Honestly, I have no idea what is a "good buy" or a better system.

In the range of $700-$1200 what would you guys recommend?

you can not go wrong with a mac

ive been running a powerbook g4 for 3 yrs and it still runs fast and sweet-

go mac, without hesitation-

Rich, I been using Dell laptops for 10 years now, they take a pretty good beating and great customer service. They run promotions all the time, people working IT here also can get you a corporate employee discount code that may save you few more bucks.

I switched over to MAC's at my house, they are nice but a little more pricey. You might also get frustrated with some of the incompatibility with PCs and Internet sites' file format.

I personally dont like MAC. I have had Dell laptops, Alienware laptops, and now i am partial to Toshiba. I have one now that i love. I paid a decent amount of money for it. But i use it for Graphic Design, so i need the horsepower. You cant go wrong with a Dell or a Toshiba.. Macs are pretty good but known fact that there is not much software out there. Yes it is getting better, but still much more for PC. And Macs are def more expensive

I'd say Mac, but that's all I've ever used so I'm biased.

I've not found a file that could not be opened on a mac, you may have to download a utility program to do it, but it always works. In your budget at the upper range you can get a Intel macbook. I have one and I like it a lot.
they have built in cameras for video chatting :sgrin: or just showing off the big fish you catch :D

What are your plans with doing with the computer? Macs are good for graffics and other editing (basically good for anyone interested in film and Media). I would go with a Dell and you will not complain. Def dont go with the sony it is overpriced cause of its name. You can get the same comp from dell a lot cheaper with the Dell name on it instead of Sony.

I agree. I used to get dells. but i do like the toshiba for me personally. I got a dell for my wife. I wanted a more powerful system for me. I am not big into extended warranties. But i did get the full 3 year warranty on my toshiba even for accidental...

Rich, maybe you should list the things that you like and dislike about your current lap top? Then people can let you know what to do from there?

Dell, Gatewat, Comcrap, Hewlet Pack$h!t, Sony and Toshiba are crap. Build your own or go to www.cyberpower.com or www.ibuypower.com and have them build a computer for you that if you built one you would build it the way they do.

Mac? Please he asked for a Computer not a doorstop or a paperweight.

Thanks everyone. I am replacing a home system with the notebook. I use the computer to update my website, chit chat on few different discussion forums, shop, bills etc... . I just want a computer that is fast and won't be a dinosaur in a year.
As of now I am leaning towards a Dell. They definitely do have great customer service and I am able to get nice discounts. I don't want to deal with incompatability that I may run into with the MAC and my budget sets me with their entry model.

Hey just curious. What the heck do you guys do on your home computer that justifies the need to spend 2G or more? Not that I'm cheap or anything but I just want to understand:) Sheit.....I might have to get me one then :D

Thanks again!

Go to the 2 websites I provided you can configure the notebook the same as on dells website(and it's an ASUS book). I have one I bought 3 years ago for 1249 and it still kicks ass.

MAC.
no issues with compatability since you can run Windows OS too (dont why you would though). switch between programs. most issue will be if you have to log in in a "work" network to check memo's & emails, usually my wife gets around it by using Firefox.

manage all your media/files with drag & drop......
& for $100 you can get a 1 on 1 session for all things MAC like iTunes, iphoto, imovie.......you dont get that with windows.

the only thing you are skipping on by buying an "entry level" Mac is storage space & a bit of speed. think of all the time your shaving by not having to deal with viruses.....LOL

if your not convinced, you should just go to a Mac place & play with it.

lastly, I heard the Vista is really bad. good luck

Well when i buy a system, i usually buy big. I am somewhat addicted to computers as i am to my reef now. I buy big cause I do graphic deisgn and when having 3 power hungry programs open at once, the 2 gigs of ram gets sucked up quick (on a laptop) imagine what would happen if trying to run on a computer with 512 mb or even 1 GB of ram. And the more expensive the more options. Mine has HD TV Tuner for it. 4 usb ports on 2 sides. plus HDMI and VGA out, upgraded screen.

Vista is OK and when i mean Ok that is all that i mean. Most programs crashed originally until the company either came out with a new version or a patch for Vista. Since then I really cant complain. I am seeing new things that it has that XP didnt. With my graphic design i sometimes will hook up a second monitor. Vista gives you the OPTION if you want to MIRROR the main screen or extend your desktop. XP didnt have that option. That is good if you are hooked up to a projector or seomthing like that for a bigger display for others to use. I use that option when we teach classes (basic computer classes).

Sorry for the rant. but like i said Computers are my second addiction. And i can rant and rant and rant.
