As a slightly off topic side note, I'm organizing several "bouts" for the purpose of gambling:

Ring 1 traditional dog fight
Ring 2 Starved cat vs. Dehydrated sewer Rat covered in razor blade armor
Ring 3 Chicken fights

In between fights there will be siamese fighting fish (beta) fights.

I'm working on hooking up some walabies but it's hard getting them in the country.

There are guys in the NFL who have actually killed PEOPLE (Ray Lewis, to mention 1) and their careers have carried on as if all they did was spill a Coke.
I love dogs. Really, I do. But as I said in other threads, the American Way... Treat animals like people and treat people like animals.

I think the real question here is: Would there be any punishment if Michael Vick had a Super Bowl ring on his finger. He was the franchise. He was expected to win championships. He didn't. He was not expected to have the behavioral problems he had last year. He did (remember him flipping off his home crowd?).
The way I see this is that the punishment is worse for killing some dogs than it is for harming children. Not that I would condone either one.

Thing is that most psycophats start off by hurting animals in their youth and then slowly move onto people. Not saying that is what Vicks will do but it does take a level of desensitization to suffering to be able to do what he did and that kind of person is not someone I want around my loved ones. I just read in a local LI paper that they arrested a guy for leaving his dog tied to a tree, doused it with gasoline and bleach and lit it on fire. The police found it clinging to life and rushed it to the vets but couldnt save it. They then found another really neglected pit pup in a cage that was suffering from crap as well but they rescued it and now are adopting it out. This guy will at most face 1 year they said but the local pols are fighting ( is it election year ? ) to raise the sentences.

Very good points. Also sickening stories about very recent horrible treatment of animals.
You also bring up a good point on pols and this being an election year. The Vick case has gotten tons of publicity and politicians can easily gain popularity by jumping on the coat tails of this case. It's about the only thing pols are good for.
I'm very much against mistreatment of animals. But I still feel that if Vick had won championships, his career would not be in jeopardy and the Atlanta fans would most certainly forget what they would consider a minor infraction.

what would be nice is if Vick steps in waters and an 400 amp service falls on top of him, then he gets bit from a Rabbid Dog, on top of that, and dies from an infection over a 3 month period .. still wouldnt be justice...
