today my great uncle died. he was an incredibly strong man who put his life at continual risk for the ideas and ideals that he held most sacred. he rescued refugees and he helped to create a safe haven for survivors. he moved arms and gathered intelligence and he did all this in such a way as to never brag or call attention to himself, even among friends. he was small but powerful, reserved but warm, generous but humble. he was a man of the world, comfortable in any culture. he was incredibly refined, and he raised two beautiful daughters. He was beloved of his wife, his children and grandchildren, his sister and her children and grandchildren, though we did not know him well.
his name was Sammy Rosenfeld, and he was the last member of my family in his generation. he will be buried on Thursday in Israel, the home of his heart, where he came three years ago in order to die there. May his memory be always for a blessing.
