Start off with a 10 gal tank, with about 2" of water and either a float or a smooth rock that it can climb out on. Keep a light over it for basking...in fact, 2 lights...one incandescent for heat, the other a fl or cfl that gives some UV...the cf bulbs cost about $13.99 from thatpetplace. Try different foods...if it eats wardley or tetra turtle pellets, you're set. If it doesn't, try pieces of fish or live guppies, earthworms....Expect one of two outcomes...bad: It will die. It's probably been so mistreated, as most Chinatown and Flushing turtles have been, that it won't survive...and unfortunately, turtles take a long time to die. Good: it will survive, and thrive. And grow...and grow.....and grow. 3 years ago I bought 2 hatchlings in Flushing. One died withn 2 months. The other was 6" long within a year and had graduated to a 20 long.....Its now huge, eats a ton and craps even more. At the same time, my sister-in-law got 2 babies on Canal...they grew into a horny male and a female...it just laid eggs on Friday. In captivity, with a steady diet and decent temperature, they grow much faster than in the wild. Oh....and don't be too hard on the person who put it out with the trash..it was on, not in the gargage...I'm sure that it was put out with the expectation that someone would adopt it. Take care, Eric

1/4 cup Celery, chopped fine
bullet_orange_small.gif
3/4 cup Bell pepper, chopped fine
bullet_orange_small.gif
3 large cloves Garlic, minced
bullet_orange_small.gif
3 Medium tomatoes, chopped coarsely
bullet_orange_small.gif
1 1/2 -2 lbs Turtle meat, chopped
bullet_orange_small.gif
2 Tbsp Zatarain's Creole Seasoning
bullet_orange_small.gif
3 Bay leaves
bullet_orange_small.gif
1/2 tsp Thyme, crushed
bullet_orange_small.gif
1/4 tsp Nutmeg
bullet_orange_small.gif
1/4 tsp Clove
bullet_orange_small.gif
2 1/2 cups Beef stock
bullet_orange_small.gif
2 1/2 cups Water
bullet_orange_small.gif
1 tsp Worcestershire
bullet_orange_small.gif
1/2 Lemon, sliced
bullet_orange_small.gif
4 Tbsp Parsley, fresh
bullet_orange_small.gif
3 Boiled eggs, grated
bullet_orange_small.gif
4 Tbsp sherry

Melt butter in a large saucepan and add flour to make a medium brown roux. Add the chopped ham and vegetables (celery, onion, bell pepper, garlic, and tomatoes). Cook over medium heat for about 30 minutes.

In a heavy skillet add 1/4 cup vegetable oil, heat, and add turtle meat, brown on all sides and cook for 10 minutes.
To the roux and vegetable mixture add the turtle meat and sauce, beef stock, water, and spices. Cook covered over low heat for 2 hours.
Thirty minutes prior to serving add Worcestershire sauce, lemon, and sherry. Parsley and grated eggs should be added 10-15 minutes before serving. Allow to rest for 15 minutes, and then serve. This allows time for all spices to blend thoroughly. Serve with extra sherry if desired.

If the turt is an aquatic (Red Eared slider maybe?) it will definately need a bigger tank than one expects. I keep two Mississippi Map turtles in a 90 gal tank, about 2/3 full of water. I'd say the best way to provide the best care is to properly ID the critter first. My turtles have been incredibly messy characters, their waste will overhwelm and as in my experience, destroy a mediocre filter; I have however had success with an over-sized canister filter and hefty water changes weekly.

If you think that it's the $5 turtle set, I think it's the Brazilian green turtle.

I always use cheese to start them eating if other regular turtle food does not work.

It's likely the set belongs to a street paddler who is fleeing or get caught by the authorities.

I use a BIG ASSSK refugium(same size as the DT) to take care of the waste. Water is clear but the bottom of the DT still have gunk around because I use a tiny pump. Hang-on filters just do not have enough room for the BIO filtration to work for turtles.
