thats real bad for the animals and the people.its crazy how deadly these natural disaters are...i always wondered why i never seened any type of program where individuals would be able to donate frags like we do (buying and trading) to help grow a reef somewhere,i mean we do get them from the ocean then why cant we give back?:scratchch

i understand what your saying and you have a point but just like serious guys qt there corals for up to months at a time i wouldnt see these corals being just dumped into the ocean.there has to be more deadlier predators of corals out in the ocen that wouldnt even scratch the surface of what pops up on our tanks every now and again.

it's not the QT that is the concern it's the hitchhikers that can end up being introduced. Such as non indigenous worms, bacteria, fungus, etc. With no natural way of controlling these threats in the effected area you could end up destroying entire ecosystems. Not too far from where I am on Long Island there is a fairly large pond that a non-indigenous plant was found in along the shore line. They removed it only to find it had overgrown the entire bottom and they had to dredge and then remove about 10' of soil from the bottom. It took them years of moving water around and removing the soil to remove the plant entirely, all because someone dumped their tank.

I am confused - do you all actually believe we are beeding hitchhikers in our tanks? I mean, they came from the ocean - there are too many tanks out here in the MR world full of pests looking awesome -

As for giving back - a couple of years ago, I gave a bunch of acro frags back to ORA when they lost thier propagation system to the Hurricane - not a natural reef, but certainly trying to save the worlds reefs.

As for the natural cause, this is all part of the cycle and the worlds way of adjusting to something - wherther or not it's global warming, I am not in a position to say, but the reefs will grow back.

Noods - there is a faculty member at Pace who is building artificial reefs in one of the carribean islands whose coral reefs have been destroyed by the hotel industry and the governments lackof regulations on dumping wastewater into the ocean at the shoreline - unfortunately, frags won't do it for them, they need colonies and have been getting them from other regions in the world to build on.

I guess the good news (not that there really is any) is that all this dead coral will be for sale as dry base rock in the near future -

There has to be a better way . . . .

jim, do you mean Dr. Cervino? I know he does some coral research and the affects of global warming.

see i like what house did in reguards of giving back atleast nothing got ripped up due to his contibution i would like to think.again these pest that destroys our corals came from the ocean look at the (crown of thorns)and it seems like something major because we have closed systems.and i would never suggestion dumping corals that are not from that region.i just think its a great idea of an organization that would be one day able to introduce aquacultured corals to regions destroyed by weather or man.

Global warming doesn't affect the tectonic plates of the world. It affects the weather.

As for the corals being re-introduced into the oceans, the only reason I wouldn't put a coral from our tanks is because our tanks are usually mixed with corals from around the world, therefore hitchhikers around the world might get introduced to this area which aren't native to this area. Its the same concept with introducing fish from one area thats not native to the area
