I'll be searching for a new laptop soon. I just want some opinions on manufacturers. Right now I have a six year old Dell, it's served me pretty well. I may go with another Dell, but I've heard HP and Toshiba make good machines. I believe I'm leaning towards an HP.

How much you willing to spend?

Get a dual core chip
Get a DVD +/- dual layer burner
Get as much ram as it will hold.

I have an acer ferrari 3200. It's 4 years old and kicks ass. For a dinosaur. Check www.newegg.com they have one day laptop deals and they rock.

Go to Cyberpower.com or Ibuypower.com and configure a good laptop for yourself there. It is well worth it, I have been doing business with them for years. I will never go to another bubblegum company like dell, toshiba, or Hewlet packshit.

Remember Alienware is owned by Dell now. And Macs make great paperweights and doorstops :)

I read once that you could use a Mac as a wheel chock for your car

Macs are truly fantastic machines that PCs just can't compare to. That being said if you're not a mac person, don't own an ipod or need to do a lot with windows machines, then DO NOT GET A MAC.

I have a few new Dell laptops and they are all fantastic. I broke one and told Dell as much. They sent a tech to my office the following day and he fixed it. I did not buy the fancy service or support option, just the one they give for free. Their high end and midrange models are all great IMO.

Beware Windows Vista.

I like Mac's.
I've used them since the appleIIe came out and I've never had a problem with one (that's a long time :shhh:).
chief I like using windows laptops for dust pans in my shop, and windows desktops for boat anchors ;) :P

forgot to mention you can run windows on the apples now if you want to.
ask Herman about that, he was a mac hater, now he owns 3 macbook pro's :lol2:

I recommend Dell, check out the Latitude line. You can still get XP on them... they make fully compatible docking stations / port replicators for them so you can hook up a monitor, mouse and keyboard if you wish. Finally, to top it off they come with a 3yr warranty. Sort of a no frills laptop, but they're well made and get the job done.

PM me if you need to talk more... I'm a Dell Reseller... I may be able to get you a better price.

Wow. No freind of yours should recommend a Dell. Purely a p.o.s Out of every 5 computers they make 4 go bad. either hardware or software and then call them and see what the support is like. It' s horrific and hard to understand the people your talking to. THEY were a great company Not anymore. Toshiba makes a good Laptop but there prices are pretty High Can't say anything about the support. Hp/Compaq still makes good durable stuff and at fair prices. If your going to go Pc I suggest them But like dell they have also used out of country support.
Me personally My next step is a mac and not because mac's are better but because with the introduction of OSx Leopard and Tiger you can now use Windows on a mac.
My job is computers and cable Mostly computers now, so I see at least 20 systems a week. I'm not biased and I actually own 2 pos dell.
Good luck Buddy whatever you decide just remember BE HAPPY!

This thread is so timely for me since my Dell Inspiron 8200 just went bad. The LCD is acting wierd, flickering and has yellow streaks from top to bottom. Does anybody know if it is worth repairing? The notebook is 6 years old.

6 years old would put you first in line for a new computer!

you must be able to get some kind of deal through your work Shaun.
