Well, about a year of work, countless sleepless nights, well over a thousand hours of footage, and we've got 6 hours of quality television to show for it! TLC (The Learning Channel) will premiere the first of a six-part documentary series called "My Life As A Child" this coming Monday, February 26th, at 7pm. The other episodes will follow same time, same place, same channel over the following six weeks. The BBC (where I work) and TLC gave 20 kids (ages 7-11) across the country video cameras to videotape themselves, their families, their lives for 4-6 months. And we then edited the footage they sent us back into the documentary and, if I say so myself, it really turned out fantastic. We were a small crew and each of us thinks this is the best thing we've ever produced. We've been profiled on Oprah (but don't let that stop you from watching), are expecting a New York Times article probably this Sunday, and are getting rave reviews from various papers (like the LA Times) and news organizations (like the Associated Press).
Each episode will profile 3 or 4 kids. The first episode, called "Hopes and Hurdles," will showcase 3 kids including Joshua from Baltimore who lives in a bad neighborhood with his mom and occasionally his grandmother. There's also Cole, a great kid with cerebral palsy who has earned a yellow belt in karate, and Marc - a virtuoso pianist who has appeared on The Tonight Show and the Ellen Show. Kids in future episodes will include a boy whose dad is a major in the marines and has done two tours in Iraq, a young girl from New Orleans whose home was destroyed by Katrina, a boy from New Jersey who studies ballet dancing, a girl from Pittsburg who plays football on her school team despite protests from her mom and boys on the team, among others.
You can check out some clips about the kids on the TLC web-site prepared especially for the web. In it the kids talk about their experiences being a part of the show. This is the url:

I wish some of them kept aquariums as a hobby, but they don't! They're just really cool kids who say and do the darnest things. Sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, and always honest.
