The Northeast has gotten soft. I distinctly remember going to school in the 1970s :)shhh:) in near blizzard conditions. Only to sit in an auditorium full of kids all day because the teachers from the 'Burbs couldn't make it in.

Well its here now, I hear it pounding off my window as I type...More ice/sleet than snow...Weather forecasts say its bc of the 38 degree layer above the storm...Starts off as rain and freezes over when it gets here...Might change to snow later as that layer loses the warmth....

When did the forecasters become so inaccurate, last nite i heard almost 7" and now its all about an ice storm or noreaster....

As for closings i dont really understand it either seems like when the forecast calls for an ice storm schools take it more serious than if it were a snow storm, weird, but they are playing it safe...As for colleges, not as easy to get them to close which makes no sense esp for commuter colleges.....

Welcome to 2007! You don't want to get behind a school bus picking up or dropping off in rural NJ, they literally will stop at every third house. My sister runs the transportation dept for one of the school districts, I asked "What's with the busses stopping at every house?" She told me the school districts caved to the parents who don't think their kids should have to walk to a bus stop anymore. These are the same parents who can't figure out why little Johnny is 50 lbs. overweight.

LoL Being a future Phys. Ed teacher I can also contest to that last sentence!!!

The funniest was waking up this morning to hear some moron say on the news that the ice/snow storm wouldnt stand in his way for V-Day because he was driving an SUV....:grumpy:

Its these people that think they are invincible to the weather who drive extra fast to prove there point...Remember kiddies just because you have 4-wheel drive doesnt mean your suv will stop any better or for that matter any sooner! :eek1:

Part of the issue with this storm is that only the weaker part took place last night. Last nights snowfall, while about 3" here, was only the beginning of what was forecast as a bit worse today. If the kids made it to school safely (hopefully) then the problem normally arises when the snow starts up again (or ice) and the buses can't get the kids HOME safely.

I know our school district has three release times. One for elementary schools, one for middle schools, and one for HS. There is no way to transport all the kids simultaneously. It takes hours for all three levels to be safely brought to their destination. Much too much time for the road conditions to deteriorate.

My daughters and I are having a great snow day! The ice is pounding on our windows, and it looks like everything is covered in a sheet of ice. I would be so scared if they were out in this, and I'm grateful that they're home with me (and that I, too, do not have to go out in this to teach)...

Even if I were fine in my uber-safe mini-van, I know that all it takes is one bad driver to slide into me to ruin my day (and my car...) and I'm sure there are really bad drivers out there today... So I'm glad of the snow day.

Still, it would be so much more fun if it had been snow and not ice - I can't play outside with the girls in ice!

Oh well.
