cats & dryers ;(

I just got a call from my daughter. Please, please for those of us who own cats, and home dryers. Please check your dryer before turning it on. My baby girl was rushing around as usual. She through some clothes in the washer, some into the dryer turned them on grabbed her little one and off they went to do some errands.
When they returned home my daughter went to check on her laundry. As she pulled her clothes out of the dryer she found hair all over them, then she noticed the blood. Yes, as you have by now guessed she found their kitten dead. Of course she is totally distraught, and refuses to touch her. Which I don't blame her. My daughter happens to be a very diligent young woman, and an animal lover as I am. This was not neglect we all check our cars for sleeping critters before we cut them on, but who ever thought of to check a washer or dryer?
The point of this is to ask you all to please check your washers & dryers for your animals before operating them.

Sorry for your loss. Keep the doors closed on these units as we all know cats and dogs like to sleep where it is nice and warm, just check before you close the door.

So sorry to hear that. my condolences to your daughter, I would be devastated if that happened to one of my animals.
Cats will jump into anything that is open, they don't care what it is.
For those future cat owners make sure they never go near the washer and dryer, nor the oven or fridge for that matter. Always check them before using or closing them. It's a habit you have to get into with them.
The same goes for closets, cabinets and drawers.

Thanks for elaborating Jonathan. I've had cats, dogs, fish, birds for over 35yrs. My children grew up with them, and we are all animal lovers. We have lost animals before, but never to anything like this.
My poor daughter, she just kept spelling out what had happened. Her youngest was in the house with her when she discovered the kitten, and she was trying so hard to conceal it from her. I told my daughter to tell the girls that Icy ran away. This may be wrong, but my granddaughters are only 4 & 6. I don't think they need to have nightmares over their beloved kitten.

Just talked to my daughter. She is doing 1000 times better. Trooper. She hasn't told the girls yet, but we are going with "Icy ran away".

"Running away" is a pretty proven method - and will be way less confusing/traumatic to her kids. This is so awful - and I am so sorry! -Arkady

Thank You All Very Much for your kind words. I am sending this thread to my daughter.
Masterswimmer, I have told my daughter of all the heartfelt condolances from the MR family. She trully needed these words of comfort since some ignorant fools were blaming her. As if she wasn't horrified enough. I couldn't even listen to the discription. I know she needed to talk about it, but I couldn't handle the vision. So I could only imagine what she must have felt like. Just hearing what had happened broke my heart. Not only for the kitten, but for my child. The loss is one thing, but as we all know if it happened to us we would question our selfs over and over.
My daughter gets up at 2am, does her route, gets home by 7am gets her girls dressed and fed. Goes off to the daycare where she volunteers and takes a van load of children to school (Her van, her gas). Back home to care for her 4 year old, do her chores. 2PM back at the schools picking up the children, then she is at the daycare until 6PM helping with homework. Back home, cook feed her family, and in bed by 8PM. And the next day is the same all over. She never has a day off. She does this 7 days a week, except of course the daycare part. So if she forgot to check her dryer it is more then understandable.
