Now that property prices are falling Jer and I are thinking of getting a place upstate for weekends. Can anyone tell me about their experience buying upstate property or which counties/towns/villages are a good value or a fun place to stay?

Thanks!!!

my parents and I have some property in Ulster County. I mean its pretty much no mans land. takes 20mins to get to the nearest shoprite. On the good side, there is pretty much no noise, no people or cars. Completely dfferent from city life. We've never had problems with people breaking in when we arent there. But I dont think i've ever gone anywhere ''fun'' up there, its more of a relax, bring some beer and cook on the BBQ for the weekend type place.

How far up are you willing to travel? Are you looking for winter/summer/both?

Everything is pretty suburby or woodsey upstate, nice quiet places. all depends what your looking for with fun. Ski towns are great but you gotto like to ski and cold weather but are pretty dead when there is no snow on the ground. Any of the lake towns are pretty good for summer activities and usually have a good night life if thats what your looking for, but then you have places like lk george which is full of tourists during weekends causing trouble and the cops go crazy because of it. Anywhere you go i wouldn;t expect any sort of night life like new york. If your looking for a relaxing place to stay for weekends with friends and a few beers over a campfire and outdoors activities then upstate is for you =0) Just be careful where you buy as alot of area's don't sell that quick upstate. Friend of mine had a house 5 mins away from hunter mountain and couldn't sell for 2 years, did alot of work to the house and the price he was selling it for was abargain and a half, a block away from a nice bar/club too.

PA economy is pretty good and going up, but its the same story. Takes a while to get anywhere and your usually surrounded by woods. I have a house in the pocono's and its great during the day but at night its pretty boring. But the real estate turn over rate is a little better. Alot more estate complexes going up there in the past 7 years than i have seen since when i was 2, and they are filling up quick.

Alistair Upstate is a term used by many people that mean many things, To me upstate is Albany, niagra, buffalo and points north. To most people from NYC upstate is anything north of the bronx border :lol2:

As far as distance, I was thinking catskill distance. That is about 3 hours from down town NYC. A train near by would be great for friends to be able to come up. We are open to other areas as well.

Winter and summer.

By fun, I meant a cute small town with craft fair or antique shops, lakes, rivers for canoeing, etc...:)

I said value oriented as well because we would like at leat 50 acres. We would be willing to have less acreage to have a water feature like a pond or river front.

Thanks for your input so far. Please keep it coming!!!

Leslie, a beautiful artsy town, not far at all from skiing, lots of rivers, woodsy, large properties is Woodstock, NY. Contrary to most peoples thoughts, it's NOT where the 'lovefest' was held. That was in Bethel, NY. Max Yasgurs farm.

Anyway, it's really beautiful up there. If you ever wanted to take a ride, LMK, I'd be happy to take you up there.

My family and I have loved the New Paltz, Poughkeepsie area for years, and that's not tooo far away, which I guess could be good or bad . . and it's gorgeous, the town is exactly like what you mentioned, replete with rivers and lakes etc. Shawanagunk (sp?) Mtns, Mohonk Mtn House, etc.

My parents own a small place in Jewett, NY which is right outside of Hunter (Hunter Mountain). Its a great area for both winter/summer and there is lots to do around the area. We have been going up there for close to 12 years and I still enjoy taking weekend trips with friends/family. We have close to 50 acres and most of that is wooded area but its very quiet and peaceful.

From where I am in Westchester it takes about 2.5 hours door to door so if you are trying to stay under the 3 hour mark its a great place to look.
