Hey Folks,
As many of you know I work in the education field. First as a science teacher for 7 years and now I work in a teacher preparation program. I have access to well over a hundred classrooms across the city, k-12, all contents.
I know first hand how important bridging the community and our schools together is for ensuring students are able to access expanded opportunities in life NOW and in the future.
To that, I am writing you to see if you would be able to spare up to 2 hrs working with NYC teachers and students simply sharing about your life, what you do, why you do it and how a student can get there.
Yes, it is that simple.
Any rules/regulations? Sure, you have to be someone that legally can enter a NYC school building with school aged children. You can actually be any age. You need to be able to travel to the school. Speak relatively coherently about yourself in a manner that is school appropriate. And be a relatively patient person (at least for the duration of the speaking engagement!).
Essentially, I am putting together a speaker series for my teachers based on what their students are learning in the classroom. Possible topics :
1. LGBTQ series (kids need mentors that look like them and can speak about how they navigated life).
2. Career series ( kids need more than just their families and teachers as role models to show them what career options there are out there, what those roles, do, etc. You would talk about your job, your training/schooling, etc)
3. Content series (similar to career, but where that is more of a general panel this one will be tied to the teacher's curriculum. For example, I have a team of teachers that are doing a unit on Public Health. So, if you do anything related to the field, you could sign up for this one and students would interview you OR present their research projects to you and you give them feedback and teach them a bit about NYC health history!)
4. Skill series ( this one is to do a series of simple workshops for kids to learn and or continue to develop a tangible skill. For example, I have teachers that coach robotics. If you are a programmer or something related, you could demonstrate your skills and let the kids pick your brain about a problem they are trying to solve).
5. Suggest something that fits you!
See? If you're interested, I can work with you and connect you to classrooms. It's a great way to spend time and give back.
If necessary, I am sure I can get a form that acknowledges your service time for your job, or whatever else you could need one of those for.
Remember, this is NOT just about science. You could do a 1 person monologue/acting, you could do a 1-2 hr session on how to write an Op Ed article, you can do a dance lesson, etc.
I am sure I can market your talents and pair you with a classroom that needs you.
