Or is football becoming a joke. QB throwing for almost 500 yds. Delay to weather, any type of high hit whether to the head or not is a penalty, fining defensive players like its going out of style. And now they are thinking of taking away kick offs. Im all for safety but might as well watch the lingerie bowl then pro ball :(

I'm with you duke I love football but times are changing and the game is too. Its not saftey the NFL is worried about its hundreds of millions of dollars in law suits they just paid out. I'm mean come on you make a career out of football which is obviously dangerous and then slam the NFL with a law suit for injuries. That's a joke!

I have no problem with a game delay due to lightning.. It's stupid not to IMO. The other stuff.. well.. It's football. But in this day and age where you can get sued for giving someone a dirty look, I understand why the NFL is going in that direction. Big hits are part of the game, but I'm sure everyone will get used to the "new and unexciting" and people will still watch every Sunday.

Currently watching an interesting episode of Frontline about NFL player autopsies and the prevalence of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. This is scary seeing how these hits are affecting the long term mental state of players.

I dont follow sports so the lingerie bowl sounds like a lot more entertaining to me.....

They are probably beginning to implement measures to prevent long term disabilities both mental and physical, it has to suck to be a professional sports player, money in the bank, retired at 39 but unable to walk, lift your kids or worst brain damage.

Helmet safety is what moved the sport away from leather. That is a ridiculous comment. The league instituted fines and players are still leading tackles with their helmets.
Im wondering what parents would let their sons play football now or would they steer them into other sports with healthier long term prospects.

Lol if you are referring to my comment you obviously are not a true sports player nor fan nor do you read the news.

Leather to helmets to overweight to bad hits, few decades pass and the league has what it has now....

Read and catch up!!! not even a sports fan and I know this.

Rugby players are not committing suicide and suffering from permanent injuries is a multi billion dollar industry.

I dont follow that sport either, I just know for a fact that the NFL is trying to ensure their players can have a normal life after sports and also remove the bad press.

Gentleman, i propose we watch rugby. NFL style contact with the same protection a golfer uses.

Rugby is a tough and high impact sport, however, the sport is not played similarly. Rugby is more fluid and there is more continuation of play where the tackles are not frontal impacts.
NFL requires repeated head to head collisions during each each game with a smaller number of players absorbing many more direct head on hits throughout the game. Look at a kick return where players are running toward each other the closing speed of two players sprinting and colliding. Do that several times a game and then face off against the front line for repeated downs.
All in the pursuit of good stats.

I think the general idea behind moving back to a leather helmet is that players would take fewer risks and wouldn't lead with their head knowing their helmet won't actually "do much". I don't necessarily agree, but I get the idea. Again, I'm not supporting the idea. Players are so used to big hits (and need more force to be brought down anyway) that I don't think it's going to change, regardless of their helmet material.

In addition, the average player is much bigger and faster than they were in the past. Simple physics will state that an object moving with higher mass and at a greater velocity will equal bigger hits and more damage. It would be very difficult to change this part of the game without drastically altering football itself.

I don't have kids yet, but I won't be letting them play football. It's just too risky. (Not to mention the fact that I was 5' 11" in high school and weighed 145 lbs. and my wife is super thin now, so it's unlikely we'll have football-sized kids anyway. That does NOT make a good football player :lol2:)

As far as other kids playing... As long as the NFL is being open and honest about the risks (and who doesn't know about them at this point), the game should continue. It's up to the league to make sure the game is as safe as possible, but in the end, players (and parents of kids) need to weigh the risks and make their own decisions about playing.
