Shakespeare makes ugly stick. It's a decent starter rod. Almost unbreakable.

Buy what u can afford. The key is to have a rod and reel that balance nicely together.
Spinning reels are easier to start out with for surf fishing.
Depending on the type of fishing your looking to do, there are some great deals out there on setups.

I have a Tsunami which is much cheaper than Ugly Stik, i was thinking of getting another one but can't decide...

You can't go wrong with a tsunami surf rod for the money. Life time warranty and much more sensitive than an ugly stick. If you want the best take a look at the loomis's, lami's, and st croix's but be prepared to spend $400+

I have a tsunami jigging rod. Love it and the lifetime warranty. My buddy is on his second replacement no questions asked.

Penn makes a surf rod that I saw at bass pro in virginia and it was black and blue and I regret not buying it till this day cause I never saw it again and ended up paying Bernie's for a Huston made 12 footer !!!!! And it pairs up perfectly with my penn ss 750

I'm not a big fan of Ugly Sticks. I have one, about 8', that I use strictly for chunking...or rather, did, before the top ceramic guide got a deep groove. Can't use that rod until the guide is replaced. Bait is fine for Ugly's, but I'm more of a lure fisherman...using 7' rods, 1 oz spoons for blues, bass, and weaks. I used to have an Ugly Stick that size, but found it too stiff and heavy for casting lures. I like some of the Shimano rods, Daiwa also. I've never used any expensive, high end rods like St. Croix or Lamiglass. But my son bought a nice Lamiglass...but it snapped in 2 when he was fighting a blue that wasn't even all that big...maybe 3-4 lbs. (Nice fisher there, Shawn!)

I love my 11' ugly stick for surf fishing, I also have a 10' st. Croix that is really nice also. For the price difference you can barely tell. Both rods have the older made in America penn spinning reels. I mostly boat fish though, but the gear is roughly the same as brands go. I would guess I have over 100 rods and 100 reels. Most being penn reels, the rods are a mix but no tsunamis they are junk.

ugly sticks claim to fame is that they are "unbreakable" this is not entirely true.

they are made of a graphite composite that is super flexable and strong, but imo has sloppy action and no real back bone.

True S Glass breaks but it is a superior feel when casting or fighting.

I have 15+ rods here and 15+ in florida I've fished my whole life and do mostly boat fishing however I've used both tsunami and ugly stick and they're alright, havent really gone expensive on surf gear though.

It also depends what you're going to be doing....for lures I like a nice sensitive rod and for chunking I like something nice and stiff to really snap the bait out there with a heavy lead sinker....I've also used offshore rods in the surf ass well to go for shark, I would hop in a kayak and bring the bait with a custom made weight and drop it down and leave my penn senator sitting in a sand spike

Thanks for your input guys. I don't think i'll spend too much money right now until i'm more experienced. I've seen a few broken rods and some flying overboard. I'm considering another 8' tsunami $35 or a 10' Daiwa combo for $70. I like the St Croix, Shimano, Penn and others but i'll give it a few months when fishing really kicks into gear.
