My grandparents had the house I live in built- back in the 70's. The family has always had dogs, the house has NEVER been broken into, not once- in fact there was never even an attempt to break in. Houses right in my neighborhood have- more than a few WITH sophisticated security systems. One house the perps were caught, but that is because they were dumb enough to move to the area right down the block while the police presence was still in my area. Other than that all that hard earned money spent and wasn't worth it in the end.

I know for a fact that the 2 scariest sounds to a wanna be burglar are 1) the clack-clack of a shotgun advancing a round into the chamber and 2) a very deep, loud bark(s).

Yes, dogs can be silenced, killed, drugged or whatever else but now a days they're looking for a quick hit, not to take care of a dog. Even with an alarm going off they can still ravish your house before the cops are even alerted from the alarm company.

Most neighbors may make a phone call but usually don't notice so they say(choose not to get involved) so the alarm going off will like car alarms now a days fall on deaf/pi$$ed off ears. You test it every so often and your neighbors eventually get sick of a stupid siren if you have that type or the crazy crickets.

The alarm goes off then central station calls the residence so you can give them a password and tell them if everything is ok and then if there's no answer they alert the police, which unless they normally sit right near your home can be another lets say 3 minutes.

Most burglars take what they want in a house in a few minutes give or take so the cops usually arrive to the aftermath.

4 legged alarm all the way for me.

I understand that people like alarms but having worked on the inside of the business is an eye opening experience. Good luck with everything. I hope that everything works out for you.

Can't agree more!

I used to have a 92 lb alarm (AKA German Shepard). We had to put her down a couple years ago, then my wife made me get an alarm.

Problems with alarms or even cameras is that people don't set them (yes MOST PEOPLE DO NOT!) and with the cameras, if they dont have a decent system and it runs out of storage or the camera does not work, or the camera gets bumped and moved.

Cameras are only good for AFTER the fact. They will not stop something from happening. Unless you have a visible working camera that will get a face shot and the person can actually see the camera! Hidden cameras are great, but most of the time they just suck.

Getting a cheap camera system is not the way to go, if you want it for SECURITY then you need good cameras that do well in low light and have good frame rates and shoot at a HIGH resolution. They must also be placed correctly which is sometimes impossible.

If you want deterrance then get a dog or alarm.

I am going to be installing cameras at my home soon but that is in case the house is actually broken into. They will also be great for when my daughters grow up and actually consider having parties when I am not home :)

Good luck with your decisions, just don't throw money away for something that is not worth the money spent.

I bought a 8 camera system for $425 at BJ's called Lorex for my office
Love it so far since I see everything on my iPhone and the best is if anyone is late I can see.
Going to buy another one for my house but want a zoom in camera for front door but cost $450 alone for the one camera since you can zoom to see there face perfect!!!!
My buddy bought a motion sencer so when movement on his driveway the system shoots him a text
