Hopefully we have some HVAC pros on this forum.

I have a Lennox hydronic air handler and the coil started to leak. I was told that it would be cheaper to replace the entire unit than to replace the coil.

My unit is 7 years old and out of the 5 year warranty period. The new units have increased their warranty period to 10 years.

So I called Lennox and asked them to see if perhaps they could offer me a discount on the purchase of a coil or a new unit. Flat out they told me to pretty much take a hike.

Needless to say I will not be purchasing a Lennox unit since I've also had problems with other Lennox products. To make this clear I was not asking for a freebie just a small discount or rebate for customer loyalty. Apparently that doesn't matter anymore.

Two years ago the heat exchanger on my boiler also Lennox developed a hairline crack and shorted out the control board.

The heat exchanger was under warranty but of course labor and the new control board were not so $2500 later I have a new heat exchanger and control board. Hope that lasts more than 5 years.

Here is the model number for the hydronic air handler that I had:

AM61V-36C-090 and the new one is CBW-36-090 3 ton, 90,000 BTU variable air handler

Basically I'm looking for a replacement but if the coil could be repaired even better.

So I started to do some research and alpine home air products carries comfort air hydronic air handlers for about $1,500 that are similar.

I got a quote from a local HVAC shop (BIG OUTFIT) that seemed to me to be pretty outrageous for reconnecting the existing condensate, hot water piping , and control and power wiring for $3697 but maybe I need a reality check.

I have a few questions:

(1) Is the coil repairable? If the source of the leak can be found can it be plugged?

(2) If not, I will get a few more estimates, is the above quote reasonable? Seems a bit high to me.

(3) Have to do some research but the $1,500 unit above may not be variable speed.

(4) Could water quality be an issue in breaking down the hydronic air coils? Maybe I should have my water checked since my indirect hot water heat also sprung a leak.

I was hoping to use this money for a backup generator but it looks like I'll be spending it again on repair bills for my heating/cooling system.

I like the hydronic heat but if I had to do it over again I would have gone hot water baseboard heat with a lower efficiency boiler and a separate hvac system. More money but maybe fewer problems.

The savings from an indirect hot water heater and a high efficiency boiler 90% on my gas bill amounts to about $30/month average. Given that I've had the unit for 7 years that's $2500 in savings which was eaten up by the repair on the boiler.

Now that I have to spend more $'s on the hydronic air handler I'm in the red.

Thanks in advance for the help and apologies for the rant.

Where in NJ are you located?
And yes your water can effect the coil in the air handler and indirect. What type of indirect? There have been issues with stainless indirects which has been blamed on water. I have only had 2 stainless indirects leak on me so have no complaints but other contractors i know have had many issues but they where all in different water locations. I have since switched to glass lined indirects, and so have alot of other contrators. If the indirect is an AMTROL then your water dosent matter they leak all the time i have no idea why some guys still install them. As for the Lennox boiler Lennox dosent make a boiler, i beleive its a Dunkirk and they slap there name on it. Dunkirk is a good company and make boilers for many other companies.

I dont replace the coils in air handlers but if you are close i can give you someones name and phone number.

Thanks for the response

I'm in Bergen County and my indirect is a Superstor 30 gallon from heat transfer products which is not glass lined but stainless

I think heat transfer has a lifetime limited warranty

With all of my systems going on me within a 7 year period I think you are right that it is the hard water

I guess it's time to install a water softening system but I should probably have it tested

Can u pm the info to me or I can pm you my #

Thanks for the info on Lennox /Dunkirk. I didn't know that

I guess with all of this happening heat exchanger going hydronic coil and the indirect the water is most likely the culprit

Superstor has a lifetime warranty, just has become a little difficult to deal with. I can understand you would like to use the warranty. The only distributer that i know of in the area now is GPS, call the tenafly branch ask for jimmy. If you are on united water i dont think you should have much trouble, anything can leak its man made. I also have a superstor i have installed alot of them only 1 leaker and 1 leaking coil. But on the funny side i think mine may have a leak but it has sealed itself up for now i will switch to a glass lined.

I will PM you someones number you can try he is out of park ridge.

Thanks for the info. Same thing happened to the Superstor. I noticed it leaking in the summer and now it sealed itself up. Problem also is the recirculating pump on the boiler never shuts off and I think it has something to do with the indirect. I'll give your contact a call. Thanks again. I'm on United Water. Was looking for the water hardness # but can't seem to find it. Every time I tested out of the tap from my kitchen I never got anything over 3kh with the cheapo test trips I used.

Im going to say this would not help your issue, not 100 percent sure. But the problem with scaling in tankless heaters is a huge issue, and im going to say different then the one you are having. Tankless heaters need to be cleaned every year, the scaling is do to the water, and mostley due to the way they make water. Other than apartment complexes you will see tankless heaters fade soon. I talk people out of them at least once a month, and i am already seeing them removed. There not a great option for a home, better used small condo or apartment.
