When Mother Nature provides it with 3/4 -1 " per week of rain on her own :)

Fall is a great time to stablilize your lawn for the following Spring. Do feed Fall fertilizer and make sure you have no lawn pests (munching on the roots). It is also the best time to add lime for a lush lawn next year.

Reseeding bare/thin patches with a perennial seed is also a good idea so weeds won't take over the area in early spring. Killing existing crab grass is another thing you want to do.

Is the lawn in good shape already?

You want to seed those asap, we're running out of warm weather where the grass will actually grow.

How new is the sod? That needs watering until it established its roots into the soil beneath.

Actually new grass seed likes cooler weather. This time of year is perfect to plant grass seed. The cool weather at night and dew in the morning help extensively.

As you said sod need consistent watering.

turf builder brand right?
Assuming you mean Scott's - correct.
Water until just before the first frost. You really need those roots to reach down into the soil beneath so they don't freeze over the winter.
Shallow watering encourages a shallow root system - that is not what you want , so you do need to be sure the lawn gets a minimum of 1 " per week.
