i bought a car used from a dealership in mawah, nj. I live in queens. The inspection says till 2014 and i paid 199$ for registration. My question is, i'll have NY plates. Is that legal? Do i need to re-inspect the car in NY? Is my car now registered to 2014? Some one chime in who understands buying a car from a different state. As of now, i dont have tags...just a 20 day temp...

Yes the car has to have a NY State inspection and if it already does then I would leave it until it expires. No reason to reinspect I have done this in the past a inspection is a inpection There is no reason to get another one you have a valid one on your winshield
Toss that 20 day temp
Im assuming the vehichle had NY plates when You picked it up in NJ

Good point albano
I was assuming you had someone look at this car before you bought it
Otherwise I have always kept these old stickers until they ran out especially with all the time you have left on that one

sorry guys, i get it now. I paid $199 for NY plates and registration. The plates and registration will be mailed to the dealership. I have to pick up plates and registration from them. Then i'll have to get my car inspected in NY. Makes sense. I wasn't sure if i could ride the current NJ inspection until it expired. thanks...

100% WRONG
NY vehicles MUST be inspected when ownership changes...doesn't matter if old owner had it inspected last month and there are 11 months left on the sticker...it is INVALID...I know, many people do it...BUT they are wrong!

do not toss the 20 day temp...that IS your current registration

Albano....so i can get my car inspected now with only handing over my 20 day temp tag from dealership? I would like to get the inspection out of the way asap...
some inspection stations will not inspect the car without the actual plates on it...the NJ dealer should give you the NY plates and another 'temp' inspection sticker...I believe your current 20 day temp is actually a 20 day 'INTRANSIT Permit'
