Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations."

She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana . In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smartass young person.

Cute write up, but ohhh so self serving. Don't candy coat the fact that the industrial revolution destroyed and is continuing to destroy our planet. It wasn't only the 'old folks' (of which I am one) that did this damage. It is continuing today, and unless we all pitch in to correct the wrongs done before us and still perpetuated today, we will see a global catastrophe within a very short period of time.

Again, cute write up, but very misguided.

I am actually very green. I have solar panels all over my roof and I have a new super efficient boiler that saves me $4,000.00 a year on heat. I recycle everything and only buy from American companies if it is possable.

(besides, the write up was a joke)

It didn't cost anything. The thing was about $2,500.00 and there was a rebate of almost half of that, and in a few months it saved $4,000.00 so it was free.
I used to burn 1,100 gallons of oil for $4.00 a gallon. That cost me $4,400 a year for just heat. My last years bill including hot water and cooking gas was $960.00
This is called a condensing boiler and it is so efficient you can't use the chimney. There is no waste heat.

I really liked this post, it was actually a realization for me. we all take blame for this present problem with our environment. I do hope that we just all do our share and help save the earth, or atleast whats left of it so that the future generation can still enjoy our natural resources rather than blame each other and waste another energy at that.

I try to do my part, i try never to take a plastic bag, i have my wife bringing her own bags to the grocery store just like they do in europe for ever. But the big shame is most of your recycling never gets recycled, me wife would put glass in the garbage and i would yell put that s*** in the recycle bin. She would laugh and tell me most of it dosent get recycled. I was your crazy, till her boss face to face laughed and tolled me they put that s*** in the same trailer and dump it in the same land fill. This is from the horses mouth trust me. That was a huge shock to me, i cant beleive it but its true.

I use plastic bags, bottles, toss my razors.

the lunch i buy everyday is in foam or hard plastic. At home I use only plastic utensils because im too lazy to do the dishes (only because i dont have a dishwasher that uses incredible amounts of electricity to run and a ton of hot water that uses tons of electricity to heat).

I like foreign products over american ones, just because most of the time they are better. I drive a Honda. 11 years old, all that needed to be replaced was the battery and alternator... IN ELEVEN YEARS.

I feel for you, Paul :)

Matthey, it is hard for me to recycle, save energy and buy American. Even the majano Wand that I invented is made in America and that is very tough. I can have it made in China for half the price but for me, it is not about money. Not in the least. I buy American Sneakers, tools and cars, but that is very hard. People that I know will tell you that I will not take a product from a foreign place for free, not even a car. Not a Porche, Mazaratti or Lamborghini.
I don't think other countries build bad things. I don't feel any hatred for people in other places. I applaud the people in those places for manufacturing items at such a fast rate for so cheap.
I have been to many places around the world, last week I was in Germany Hungary and Austria. I have been to japan, Cambodia and Viet Nam.
Italy, Australia and Greece. I have met very nice people everywhere I went.
But for "me" as a proud American and an American combat Veteran, There is no choice.
It also does not bother me that you and many American people buy foreign goods. It also does not concern me that you do not recycle. That is none of my business. We can still be friends as most of my friends also do not buy American or recycle.

That is what I thought. Most people I meet that are hardcore USA only purchasers have been in a war. Im assuming (never been in a war) it really puts things in a totally different perspective.

I still recycle my cans and beer bottles though!
