Again, I come to you before another forum because I know we have some computer wiz guys here... Our own "manhattan geeks"

The run down: I'm messing with my moms lab top. She told me it has Internet, but says page cannot be displayed. I did ALOT of looking around sites for information on my computer and found some ways of fixing it. She most likely got it from her dumb couponing sites she goes on all the time, and it's some bad malware or whatever it's called. When I run a "diagnose connection problem" it says it detected a winsock provider catalog has a problem. Then click to reset it, and it does nothing. I read about a file to download, and then upload on the computer lspfix, but that said no problems. I did some command prompt thing with reset winsock and still nothing....

What do you suggest I do to fix this? Again, it says Internet connected and good signal strength, but not working and page cannot be displayed.

First off lets check her hosts file. A lot of Malware dumps bogus entries there. It is located in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Edit that file using Notepad

All of the entries should have #'s to the left of them.. If not please PM what does not..

If that files looks clean and I assume you are using IE, you need to look at your proxy settings. Some more advanced malware makes an entry here which will cause those issues as well. Make sure you are not using a Proxy, if you are UNCHECK it.. I assume you do not need to be using a proxy. This is under IE Options just click the connections Tab..

Let me know how that works out for you.. If none of this resolve your problrm I suggest you download and install the FREE version of Malwarebytes. RUn that on your C drive, and see if it finds anything. If it does remove it and reboot and retest. If the same issues arise then we need to dig deeper maybe install hijackthis and you send me the logs and we go from there..

ANyway let me know if this was helpful :) I cant believe im doing tech support on MR lol :)

IE alwayas gets blasted with Malware. Try and install Google Chrome. I have found that there is crap so deep that IE just stops working. If Google Chrome installs then you know that it is IE directly.

Chrome is much faster anway.

Sorry guys, I'm not that computer crazy, so if you can break it down a bit easier on how to fix it, that would be great lol. I don't know about editing things in note pad, proxy, dos prompt, ect. Set by step please lol. I know some stuff, but not that crazy...
