Did you feel it?

Wow, an earth quake now and a catogory 4 hurricane MAY slide by New York towards the weekend.

Looks like backup plans for the tanks are called for again.

A funny comment from the abc news live feed, a speaker said, "we have all the contingency plans for everything except earth quake in Washington, the Capital."

Heard another comment from a so called expert in the field, "quake of higher magnitude is unlikely to happen later." Well, all I can say is no one else in the field expect a 5.9 quake there before today either. We are smart but mother nature continuously surprised us smart people.

Good news is that no structure has fallen so far in NYC even they though the news feed say most buildings in our area are not built for this magnitude.

Better news is no one has been reported hurt so far.

The Plates here are denser, colder, harder so that is why we can feel it all the way from here.West coast,5.9 is laughable.

True 5.9 for the West Coast is common but their buildings are made to handle that while NYC aren't. So we should be more careful now.

The important point is that the scientists have not identified the REASON(I am talking about the epicenter) yet-that's is we still don't know why and how it happened and thus what the highest magnitude we will get in the near or "predictable" future.

Not completely true, since airfields/ heliports became a major form of transportation in the NY metro area, most buildings were designed to withstand a given amount of impact from a vehicle in flight. It's why most buildings have large, bright lights or beacons at the top. Also the foundation and piles were designed to absorb and distribute the vibration from higher up as it is to absorb from below since the Ramapo fault is somewhat close. 50 or so miles I believe ?

I'm not an engineer, just an accountant, but I do have a few certs from ACI.

That's some reassuring info.

We need to get some chainsaw that can mount to the arms!

Agreed from my experience killing zombies (in Left 4 dead) chainsaws are a must.

cmon people MR needs some emergency measures for the zombie apocalypse! We should start off by strapping lasers onto our fishes to protect our reefs!
