So, my 2 friends and I just spent several hours trying to install a HID kit on my 05 Hemi grand Cherokee limited. I got the kit awhile ago from xtremehid.com. I had the kit in my Mitsubishi evolution. When I traded that car in, I took out the HIDs and now installing them on the grand Cherokee because the bulb pattern is the same. So, I read that most people use relay wires with HIDs on grand Cherokees, most using 55w HIDs, but I only have a 35w hid kit. So, we tired hooking them up with the relay kit from xtremehid.com... No good. I don't know if the kit is wrong or what but they won't work or we did something wrong. So, I then tried to hook them up without the relay. Worked and powered up fine. When I shut them off, the flicker like a strobe light. So, I figured it was the light delay I set the EVIC for 30 seconds, I shut that off. Tried it again, and no good. Then I shut every light option off and started just turning the dial of the lights on and off. Depending on how we did it, we came up with...

1. All high and low beams flickered until we manually unplugged the light wires to the ballast. even with key out, clicked lock doors, everything. They would not turn off.

2. Even with the light option to delay 30 seconds off, they all flickered for 30 seconds after I turned the lights off. We were confused, read the manual to make sure we turned off the 30 second delay the right way, and still, after 30 seconds, they stopped flickering.

3. The passenger side, after turning the lights off would flicker 3-6 times, then turn right off, but driver side would stay flickering til we unplugged them.

4. The low beam light just stopped working, I checked to see if the fuse blew, and realized they don't have separate fuses, waiting a few minutes, and I worked again, but flickered.

So, after several hours, and me getting really pissed, and about to throw them, I gave up. I unplugged everything, put it all back into the box, grabbed the fog light HIDs, put them in, worked perfectly, no problems, drove home...and started typing this up... And now here I am posting it on all the forums I use...

Help! What the heck is going on? common problem? Am I doing something wrong? If you want to see, go to xtremehid web site, look up the 9005, 9006 HIDs, and those are the HIDs I have. Then, go to their relay kits, look up the 9005, 9006 relay kits, and that's the relay kit I have.

Thanks guys...

it's flickering because you're not using the relay. unless your stock harness is thick enough to support the initial draw of power, i suggest using a relay unless you want to burn out the stock harness. the initial draw of power is much greater then 35w. your relay is probably bad. get a new relay, they're about $15. pretty sure that's your problem.

+1 you can get a new relay kit for about $20.00 by where i work in queens. The problem is that there is enough amp going to the unit. I had the same problem with one one of my cars. I put in 100s of these lights in cars as a other hobby of mines is customizing cars.

Ok, I'm going to go outside right now and take pictures of my relay harness I have and you guys can explain what wire goes to what. This is what I have...

2- 9005 hid ballasts and bulbs. Both side high beams
2- 9006 hid ballasts and bulbs. Both side high beams
1- 9005 hid relay harness
1- 9006 hid relay harness
1- fog lamp relay harness which is exactly the same as the 9005 & 9006

Does 1 relay harness go into 1 bulb, or both sides high or low? Not including the fog lights, how many relay harnesses do I need seeing I have a total of 4 ballasts.

Did you try reversing the connector going into the ballast?

Here's teh site it was from: http://www.hidxenonlights.com/installation_guide

Yes, when I had them in my evo they HAD to be reversed to work. The truck now runs the right way.

I actually got it to work. I found out that I had a few wires plugged in that did not need to be, which I guess was causing problems. Now after trial and error leaving a few combinations, I finally got it to work with the relay.

Thanks all

I would trouble shoot by putting the hid kit on another car. Try to buy another ballast (fairly cheap now) and test it. I've had experience with the same exact issue and it was a bad ballast.
