I have a bunch of zebra striped hermit crabs (Calcinus laevimanus) in my 10 gal. I noticed a few of them are getting a bigger and may need new shells soon. Where can I get empty shells?
My local store would just give me a handfull off the bottom of one of their tanks or from the fishbowl they have to collect shells to sell for decoration or substrate additions, should be easy to find! Online for about $5 you could order a handfull of assorted small shells in bulk, just dump them in the tank
Most LFS have empty shells, just ask them. IME, I have found that the asteca or turbo-type snail shells are almost universally rejected by the hermits. They do seem to prefer nassarius or cerith-type.
