I am starting a saltwater 10 gallon. what type of filtration should i run? Im not going to be using a protein skimmer, so will a regular aquaclear biowheel plus live rock work? any other recommendations?

I plan on keeping fish, and maybe one piece of coral

I would do opposite. One fish and lots of coral.

Regular water changes will do you fine without a protein skimmer. Make sure you are using RO/DI water.

Biowheels are nitrate factories. I wouldn't use that. Get a small powerhead and do regular water changes.

I have an AquaClear 20 (up to 20 gallon) filter on my 5.5 gallon with a minijet 404.

Cvp is bang on about the water changes. I was doing 2.5 gallon changes on mine every Saturday, but have since cut back to 1 gallon on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The more rock you can shove in the tank the better the tank will do. I only have about 4 or 5 pounds of rock in mine and I really to add some more, though my rocks are rather large unfortunately.
