Hello everyone, I have been reading alot of these board for awhile and have been keeping fresh water fish for sometime now and decide to setup a Nano Cube 12 gallon. I will be modding the tank where I will be covering up the top vent port and cutting out grooves just above it to make it skim the water, I have read that it acts just like a skimmer and worked great for alot of ppl. I have well water which must be great my freshwater fush never had to wait on anything with it, just introduce it to the tank at the right temp. Anyway...I want to put in some clown fish and my wife is partial to the Nemo type. First off what clown fish name should I go with? And can I buy 2 at the same time and place them in the tank together? What other kind of cheaper small and colorful fish can go with the clown? Do I need something more to pump around the flow of the water like a cheap pump or something? Also with 16 lbs of live rock and live sand what else should I need to keep the tank up and running? What types of salt or other equipment should I have? should I add a pump and or what kind? A list would be great! I am a complete newbie and I thank you head of time for any and all advise. Please keep in mind I am working on a limited cash flow so I would like to keep cost down if at all possible.

Hey man, first of, :welcome:

Second, you just gots to be patient sometimes because people can miss some threads sometimes. It's only been two days since you posted, so here's the first response.

The first thing that should be on your list to purchase is a good book. (Or a couple) Try looking into these as they will help you greatly and will be an excellent reference and will give you confidence in what you're doing:

The clowns you speak of (nemo type) are either ocellaris or percula. You should purchase mated ones or 2 small ones from the same tank/batch and add them together for them to pair up. If you want to add more fish, you should look at these lists: http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=44760 and http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=95733 but just keep in mind that you can't add too many fish to such a small tank. To me, 2 clowns would do it. Also, make sure the tank is cycled first before adding any livestock, but I'm sure you know this being into freshwater already.

What kind of tank are you looking at again? Does it already come with a pump? Circulation is necessary for oxygen to be added to the water, just like in freshwater tanks. If you want to do corals, you will need even more. Now, how much exactly, depends on what type of corals you want to keep which also means you need to have adequate lighting.

You will need several things to maintain the tank. There are various salt mixes out there and I would start out with what's available around you since shipping on salt is sometimes high. Some popular brands are oceanic, instant ocean, kent marine, red sea... You will need a hydrometer or a refractometer to maintain salinity, a heater, a thermometer, separate nets, test kits (especially nitrites, nitrates, ammonia, PH, alkalinity, and calcium), and others that I'm sure I've missed. Again, look into those books which will help you in this area also.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. :)
